Meross Smart Garage Opener

A few months back, my mom hit me with a request that made my blood run cold… She wanted a garage door opener she could control from her phone. I had visions of midnight tech support calls and FaceTime sessions filled with “it’s not working again.” But hell, she’s my mom, so I dove in.

I don’t run a full-blown Smart Home because, frankly, I like my house dumb. Just about every “convenience” I’ve added over the years has turned into some kind of digital tantrum when the Wi-Fi farts. So I needed something simple, reliable, and most importantly – something that, when it screws up, just gets the hell out of the way.

After a bit of research and some whiskey-fueled scrolling, I landed on the Meross Smart Opener. It’s basically a little brick about the size of a deck of cards that bolts onto your existing garage setup and gives it a brain.

Installation? Idiot-proof. Took maybe ten minutes, and that includes hunting down a screwdriver at my mom’s house. The app setup took longer, but even that wasn’t bad. I tied it into HomeKit so my mom can open her garage from her phone, her car using CarPlay, or her voice – whatever mood strikes her. And if it dies? The wall button still works. The beauty of simplicity, right there.

Anyway, I’m bringing this up because the damn thing’s on sale for Prime Day… thirty percent off. Less than forty-five bucks to make your garage smarter than half the people in your HOA. Hard to beat that.

Specs look pretty neat, wish it had a captive web site for setup vs an app. Its not clear if the meross cloud server plays a role continually after you pair into Apple/Google home. Those details come up if you firewall some countries off your wifi lan or dmz wifi lan.

It sent no data over the cloud while I was there and using it. So, unless there is some sort of a Cron job (highly doubtful) that it runs, I think you are good.

I've got 3 of them installed. They can be a bit finnicky to get the closing time set correctly.

I think the biggest annoyance I've had with it is that there's no 'guest mode' You've can't give someone else temporary access to open/close the door. You'd have to give them credentials to your Meross account.

For things like this, I never rely on their native apps… instead pick a protocol like HomeKit and use that. You can easily give guest access.

Curious for those that have used the Meross with openers with built in MyQ and how it works. I have two openers that have built in myq and one has stopped working completely and liftmaster/chamberlin support is not helpful in solving it (I suspect a hardware issue). I have been considering getting the Meross to add to it. Although, my quality of life hasn't been diminished with the one opener not working via wifi...

I wish Amazon would expand their in-garage delivery beyond MyQ. That would be the one thing holding me back from switching.
My current opener doe not have MyQ built in so I am using an old adapter/interface Liftmaster used to sell.

They come in?

We recently got Amazon delivery. It's crazy ordering stuff and it arrives 5-6 days later to my door.

I don't have a porch so stuff gets rained or snowed on for a few days if I'm gone.
Used to be 7-10+ days and a 45 min trip to the post office.

The opener control is a push button that's wired in.

Look up Amazon Garage Delivery.
Seems that also use Genie and Overhead Door systems now.

Would be nice if they just used the man door.
Why open a big door letting all the heat out just to drop a trash bag mailer with a $5 part.

Because the man door is less likely to be automated and internet connected.
Of course if you are creative enough to register a man-door opener on your MyQ account it should work.

i think you have it backwards, why would anywhere make you leave doors open to your home? However lots of HOA in florida require garage doors closed or only open for an alotted time. Do you live in a HOA that requires you to leave your doors open?

A quick search seems to indicate that most (if not all) of the stories are about one California HOA that made that requirement, but it has since been rescinded. It was an older community that was built with carports, not garages, and some owners had enclosed them to make garages. One or two owners were using that space for friends to live in or for short term rentals in violation of the HOA rules. Just because someone is on the HOA board it doesn't mean they aren't stupid.

Similar situation here except mine still works fine. I'm just wondering if I could use this Meross product to make the garage door compatible with Homekit because MyQ is not.

You install a hall effect sensor on the door and jamb. It's basically a closed or not closed sensor.

I've not used the MyQ, but installing the Meross was cheaper than buying all the stuff required to enable MyQ on my opener.

Yeah, It took me less than 2 minutes to find the same information you did. Sad that people make outright BS claims, and even sadder that people believe those claims and then perpetuate them. Showing their ignorance.

I read about this. So, a bunch of people had converted their garages into bedrooms/apartments/dorms for relatives that needed a place to stay for a few months to get back on their feet. But the homeowners hadn't really done anything to the garage other than throw a bed out there. So the HOA wanted people to leave their garage doors open all day so no one could be sleeping out there. It was super ******.

My two LM residential openers have some sort a smart switch interface -- unlike old openers where any doorbell button works, for these you need their special switches to work the door and the switches to be learned/paired to work even w/ the physical wire interface... So these 3rd party automation devices may not work unless they're designed to mimic that, or you have an opener that supports the "close these contacts to work the door" type interface.

I have one if these openers for my roll up door. It’s an Aussie company so frequencies etc are all different from NA standards. The opener is a wireless keypad. I just wired the automation system’s opener relay (dry contact) to one of the buttons on the keypad which is a momentary close signal to the circuit board on the wireless keypad.

If the automation relay closes for a moment (is configured as a momentary switch) then the wireless door controller interprets it as a button press and opens/closes the door. Red wires go to dry contact Zwave relay:

Another alternative is to the check the contacts on the opener motor itself to see if there are dry contacts provided.

For HA, I’d very highly recommend the ZOOZ ZEN17 Universal Relay. I’ve used a few and this is the one I currently use for my door. It’s rock solid. It also has parameters for momentary switching, normally open, normally closed etc so will work with pretty much anything.

does it have a web portal instead of an app for intial setup, can it be setup without cloud?

The Zen17 is a Zwave device so would 100% be configured via HA and Zwave parameters. Zooz has device drivers etc to set it up as a garage door that you can grab from their site. There is no cloud component to operate or program this relay. I use it with Hubitat in my garage to automate the door along with auto closing if no motion is detected for 10 minutes. This has saved me a few times in winter when the door has auto-reversed during -30 weather. The automation system will close the overhead door and keep trying every 10 minutes..but only if no motion is detected in the shop.

A key component of this setup is the contact sensor on the door that I have modified a bit with a small 5V solar cell and two AA rechargeable batteries (instead of the 3V CR 2450 lithium button cell) to keep it charged up even with weeks at -20C. The logic needs that sensor reliable as it is used to determine if the door is open or closed! This is a Smarthings door sensor modified for a very long life battery. It’s been 4 years since touching that sensor or batteries and it sees -35C in winter! 5V panel is outside the door. The AA cells are connected to the lithium button cell contacts in the door sensor, effectively replacing the cell. The 5V solar “panel” is only .5 watts and includes a diode…and there is zero need for a charge controller.

Sorry @Ryan for this off topic stuff however I’ve been messing with garage door automation (and tossed some **** hardware) for about five years now and have a rock solid setup as a local control / non WIFI alternative. It is sadly not exactly off the shelf…cuz no one makes a solar charged Zwave/zigbee door sensor AFAIK.

I have a few Shelly Uni Plus which as you know are WIFI only. Honestly they are too smart (and therefore steeper learning curve) to get them working correctly with HA or Hubitat by the time you are done with all the integrations etc. All that extra code etc is a promise of random time ***** in the future…

i refuse z wave, wifi only. plus i couldn't do z wave if i wanted to, it would either be insanely expensive or not physically possible. z wave is great for a single house, not a sprawling farm.

Either has the same issue with range, but the newer 800 series chip Zwave advertises a range up to 1 mile. My shop required a LAN drop from the house for WIFI and a WAP in the shop. So lots to go wrong there between the switch, wiring, WAP. I’ve replaced all of these at times over the last 5 years.

I do however have both Zigbee and Zwave working 100% relatively in my shop, just via the inherent mesh that Zigbee/zwave uses.

All that said, this WIFI opener given @Ryan ‘s review is pretty much a no brainer given the cost/simplicity if you have WIFI in place. Any network, WIFI, Zwave, Zigbee has its own challenges. I’ve been in the IT industry for 35 years…and heavy into automation for nearly all of the that. Nothing is 100%.

I do have something like 230 devices in the automation network here and honestly the IP limitations alone would create issues on my network requiring netmasking tweaks to open up subnets etc. The other issue is power use…WIFI battery powered sensors don’t work due to power requirements, whereas zigbee/zwave can go several years on a cell, or pretty much indefinitely using the solar power hack I posted a few back.
