Another day, another application for the new shop laser… My little hot rod is running a generic Mallory coil. It was finished in a sort of pot metal chrome that clashed with the rest of the motor and I’ve been meaning to paint it. Last week, I did just that when I got an idea. Why not throw this thing under the laser?

So I pretended my brother’s hot rod shop was making coils back in 1951, imagined how one might look, and then drew it up. Twenty minutes later and the Hellfire Ignition Coil was born.

Anyway, here are the details:

Great video. I love that you brought 1951 and your brother into the mix. Turned out great.
3D printers and CO2 lasers in the shop? A guy can sure feel old in a hurry around here.

Saw the video last night, good job.

Curious though, all the design is far more precise than I guess I would expect for something made in the 50's. Any thought on making the lightning bolts and label look more like it was hand painted?

I’m not aware of any early coil with art that wraps entirely around the body. Most were either rubber stamped or featured an aluminum or brass plate - some (Kong for instance) with details just as intricate as this.

Point being, this isn’t a traditional coil. It’s just inspired by traditional art. In fact, it’s temporary as the car is getting a magneto.

That turned out really great. Would've been really cool if the coil top would've been that old reddish/brown bakelite color.

In a few months maybe, if that photo (sans text) is viewed enough, there WILL be guys going to their local speed shop asking if a GENUINE 'REX HELLFIRE' ignition coil be found........

That IS very cool, by the way!

This looks like a prime Garage Journal merch. opportunity.

It's really cool. All that's missing is it coming in a cardboard box and handed to you by a bespectacled parts store manager with a button up shirt and a pocket protector full of pens after he leafed through his counter parts catalogs to get you the right part number.

Ironically, the whole driver behind this project was to get attention towards my need of a Harman & Collins Magneto on The Jalopy Journal. It worked and even more ironically, it was a good pal of mine that had one in hiding. So, it's on the way and this coil will have a short lived life on my car...

That being said, I have other ideas for the laser and my hot rod. :)

@Ryan -

Damn nice flathead there!

If you're running a 12V system and using an external resistor and are looking for a BLACK coil with the equivalent "mule kick" of the Mallory or that big fat ugly-*** thing "Accel" made, search around and see if you can find an NOS #UN175 Niehoff.
(Wow... I just checked ebay and they're asking for $50 or $60 bucks! We sold that for about $20.)
Uncle Harold and I sold a hell of a lot of them to the "hot rod" crowd when they didn't want to pony up the bucks for the Mallory red-top or the Accel models. Epoxy-filled unit. Damn hot fire.

* I just looked again at all of them that are currently listed. AVOID the one stamped "TRW" - that's not the real deal. The original has a ribbed black plastic case.
