I've got a gas trimmer for along the long fence rows etc and the Milwaukee for up around the house. I always like the Milwaukee for how light it is. And quiet haha.

I've come to appreciate battery powered for my needs more and more. Stick the battery in and go, easy peasy. Heavier use cases like you have with larger properties, full time landscapers etc still need the power and ease of refueling that combustion engines offer.

Now I'm in the race for what technology matures to practical use first....the robot lawn mowers or my currently 7 yr old daughter. I expect the robot wins...but mowing isn't a task I enjoy so I'm optimistic in the next 2 or so years I can offload that to a robot. Outsourcing to a neighbor kid runs me 65 bucks a week....I don't dislike mowing that much....but a couple more years and I'll be happy to let the souped up Roomba take it

Like you I have a corner lot now, but it is 3 side of roadway type of property. The goal is to smooth out the yard some since the yard is so lumpy. Once the yard is smoothed, that might be when I start looking at the robot too. My landscaper was charging me $60 a week, which wasn't bad since I didn't have the time. But this season he wanted to up the price and so due to being stretch thin in finance I decided I would start cutting both yards myself. As a high school landscaper, I understand what's involved but since it's a task I can do, it's hard for me to pay someone else to do it. Plus, I am going to be tearing up the yard and trying to coordinate with the landscaper what special care I want taken when cutting new grass is just not easy.

Oh, and I still need to try that hydrating the trimmer sting trick, but it's not hard for me to wind a new string on the trimmer so I don't think much about it. I just take a spool of string in my pocket while trimming and just put it on when needed.

Someone please bid this up so I stop seriously considering putting a number on this....ya'll know I don't need another damn project and would be far more beneficial to just work on what I've got and improve the existing flow

If it wasn't 13 hrs away I'd probably have less heartburn on chasing this

Thought about it....wife's a bit busy to run off for a week right now....there is a 3d printing conference/show in Denver this weekend and the thought of trying to get a pickup on Monday AM instead of Thursday....drive to Denver to see the show, then be in Cody first AM Monday and then back home super late Monday.

834mi according to Google. That's a good chunk, even for me, in a day!

Edit: And you'd be rolling through my old stomping grounds on your way home.

Yeah no way I'm making that in a day with my wife and/or kid(s). It's not an auction outfit familiar with this type of stuff so they're not skilled in crating/loading for shipment otherwise I might consider that.....

Well for some documentation for posterity since I don't know how long the auction details will be visible

3 yr old Hammer A3 41 combo jointer planer, single phase with carbide cutter head. Sold for 5k plus 10% buyer fee + sales tax. It's around an 11k or 12k dollar machine new now and appeared to be very lightly used. Seems like a fair price, this morning it was at $1600 which I expected would at least double today and that $3k-ish was my max for me on a machine I didnt need. Then spent a bit of time gazing on the collection of iron in the garage and thinking about different layouts and if they are better or just different.

Getting the planer and jointer positioned so I can use either one with less then a couple minutes of moving **** around(prefer less then 1 minute) is the goal....I might have an idea....but not fully fleshed out yet.

Challenges like this make me both wish for more space and less **** simultaneously. Them my wife reminds me I would have filled a 4 car garage to a similar level and I get excited that it would've meant another bay worth of tools ...and she shakes her head and wanders off

I hear ya, and I’m trying to condense my wood working tool footprint to a 10’x12’ area so the wife can still park in the attached garage. I believe I will have tools on rolling carts in the attached garage. But it would be nice to have a few more tools in there to make tasks easier……

I think the robots have already won. I was looking at this brand specifically at a show last year and it seems like it would work good. I'm still debating getting one and selling my mower.

So let's see

This forum cost me 30 bucks from Ryans recent post on knives...I'm impressed with it so far for 30 bucks

20260502_080013.jpg

Minor upgrade to the smoker with a better grease bucket

20260502_110004.jpg

And tossed some pork shoulders in

20260502_110014.jpg

20260502_171200.jpg

And working on front pads and oil changes on the Volvo XC60
20260502_122006.jpg

Pads are done, oil change is done other then needing to reset the maintenance indicator...need to bleed the brakes now

Hooray....a tool that's sat unused has now been used

20260502_200657.jpg

Works great, simple, effective... definitely easier than a 2 person bleed.

Only challenge was the 90 fitting wasnt going to work out here

20260502_201010.jpg

Fortunately the 90 had same thread pitch on both ends, so unscrewed the quick connect fitting from the 90 and put it directly to the cap and worked great

Off to see what one cost and if I can get one. Seems my mighty vac pump isn't acceptable anymore!

Edit***

It appears the K500 Ford/Asian Brake bleeder Kit will work for the ford truck, both Subaru, and the Nissan in my fleet of vehicles all for $104 before tax and shipping!

Just need to purchase the toyota/jaguar/camaro/buick adaptor to finish out the whole fleet.

Yeah I need to get the adapter for the Nova now....went to order and it was 26 bucks for shipping and I held off....lot of other fluids I need to get swapped before brake fluid gets to top of list on it.

Saw one of the new fangled "Bluetooth" hitches in real life

20260504_094759.jpg

20260504_094822.jpg

Crappy pic of the trailer, but it's a single axle short 5th wheel trailer for a semi and assuming was being moved between yards.

Are those Bluetooth hitches better or worse than the deck magnets I use on the flat bed ? 🤣🤣

I have a lot of questions....maybe it's just better I don't know 🤷‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️

Yeah...all your questions are valid. Single axle 5th wheel trailer with axle way back...on a cheater hitch bar so it's tilted way forward putting most of the weight actually on that hitch and bumper. I assume since there are a bunch of cross dock and truck yards in the area they've done this sketchy move before....I'll be damn sure to not follow close if I see it again.

While working on the Volvo last week found what I learned was the sway bar end link had "unlinked" itself...so lower end where ball is out of socket

20260507_165402.jpg

Popped it back together but got the new ones in today from FCPEuro and got it swapped with a 5mm Allen key, 15mm wrench, flashlight and vice grip

20260507_171353.jpg

Other side is still solid but I've got it on the bench ready to change when I get 30 minutes.

Got out of the house a bit yesterday and stopped in at a wood slab yard that was a venue for a maker meetup

20260516_123820.jpg

20260516_123827.jpg

There are a couple woodworkers who live in Omaha and have a podcast with an Iowa based one so they hosted and got some of their sponsors to toss in some good raffle items. Raffle ticket fees were for charity so hopefully they're gonna call me today or tomorrow and tell me I won something, and if not it makes the question of where will I store something new easier lol.

Good time to get out and visit a place I hadn't been before. Had the almost 5 yr old with me who was being shy and clingy so didn't get to talk as much as I would've liked but maybe next time.

Haven't made much progress otherwise. Nova needs to come out of the storage unit but we have visitors for the next 2 weeks so don't have time to work on it.

Personal truck tossed a "no oil pressure" warning of death on the dash Friday so it needs towed to a shop. 2014 Silverado with the 5.3 and suspecting oil pump as it has a solenoid issue on the oil pump already, it's a 12 to 15 ish hr repair and I would like to do it but don't have the time right now. Work is a disaster at the moment and probably getting worse so taking a couple days off to work on the truck isn't viable right now.

But it rained overnight so at least mowing is put off for a couple hours!

Rear pads on a 2015 Volvo XC60.... Uneven pad wear like this a concern? Thicker pad is the outer with lots of wear left, inner is toast

20260517_094329.jpg

20260517_094559.jpg

Guide pins are free and moving easily. This has an electronic parking brake so not sure if that may be contributing to things hanging up and dragging

I have noticed cars with EPB having increased pad wear for sure. If all is good with slides and moves freely its probably related to the epb system. I recently did an pil pump in my father in laws 6.2 silverado. It wasnt terrible but I wouldn't have wanted to do it without being on a lift.

Rear driver's side had basically identical wear so I'm agreeing with it being the EPB function vs a hanging caliper or guide pins. At least with consistent wear I'm not ordering a caliper or rebuild kit and taking it back apart shortly.

I've got similar thoughts on the oil pump change....there are some good videos on the tube of it being done and they're all on lifts...a set of quickjacks might be fun but with everything else going on writing the check is the wiser choice here. Every new video I watched last night had the wife muttering a different variation of "that sounds like a big job"

Umm, the L8P crate will drop right in...if I have to have a Gen V direct injection setup, it's going to be that one, or an L8T with the L8P camshaft...full send. For those following at home, the L8X variants are 400 cubic inches or 6.6L.

One of the video channels I watched detailing the labor involved....might have been Rob The Mechanic did comment on the irony that book time on this repair was more than book time on a full engine swap

The volume of rust on the truck makes it a bad candidate for the swap....but the thought of rolling that 5.3 down to the Nova with some additional go fast be fun parts bolted on crossed the mind lol

Car got test drove and finished....yard got mowed and almost 5 yrs old loves to use the leaf blower

20260517_154302.jpg

Yard bird quarters got tossed on the smoker

20260517_150541.jpg

In-laws are here with us so an extra vehicle in the driveway and father in law(gifter of the Nova) is a bit **** about vehicles and the significant risk of hail tonight was going to push him over the edge ....I setup the permanent shop in the single car garage stall so **** like this can happen....don't love doing it but 5 or 10 minutes and it rolls around enough for 2 cars to cram in

20260517_162411.jpg

Storm risk is similar to worse tomorrow so stuff probably gets put back on Tuesday

Chicken quarters came out pretty well...overshot the temp a bit but the wife was taught a naughty habit from her mother of requiring meat to be overcooked so it was cooked for them.

20260517_173913.jpg

I often get distracted while cooking so when doing chicken I try and brine it ahead of time to give a bit more "tolerance" for overshooting temp and not making it dry. The family approves and 3 quarters left for leftovers so that's a successful meal

@82355 stay safe out there tonight and tomorrow!

It hailed here for a bit. We will have to go check crops tomorrow. The old man had me unhook the field cultivator a couple days ago, so if we have to replant, I am blaming him!

Chicken looked good!

Martin

Hopefully damage is minimal. We have one pivot section down and a lot of emerged acres that the wind scoured bare. Unsure how those are going to do....not very well is the expectation

Sometimes you just have to make some sort of progress in the garage on anything after a **** day at the office and the expectation that tomorrow will be more of the same

20260521_204725.jpg

So the put up wet and ignored for probably a couple years WoodRiver 4-1/2 I picked up a month ago or so finished it's sharpening, some surface rust cleaned up on sole and sides then reassembled. Good enough to take a nice shaving on some sapele mahogany I had in the vise....now to figure out where it's new home is. Also got the scrub plane sharpened so it's ready to do something

In other news...gave the go ahead to fix the Chevy...shop says the oil pressure solenoid failed catastrophically....about $3k to fix which *****.....but I have the money and not the time and it's a paid for truck....so should be done next week which is probably faster then would have been done if I did it...so it at least lowers my stress there and I have a lower risk of teaching my kids as many new words if they come into the garage lol
