I haven’t asked nor found the answer for a couple years, so I hope it’s ok to ask again. Does anyone know when they added the makers mark “s” to combo wrenches like the one above?

Right or wrong I do not know but I was told the "s" was for Stanley, meaning that tools with the "s" were made under Stanley ownership.

I was gifted these Proto 243 groove joint pliers from a friend who is decluttering his tool collection. They cleaned up nicely.

I have a few tools now with bare handles and might give them a plastic-dip treatment to offer better grip.

Here's an interesting Proto wrench - it just came from a flea market. I can find no info at all on it.
It looks like the fairly common pebble flare wrenches, but the head is very beefy, and it's 8-point.
Internet Archive doesn't seem to have a catalog old enough for this to make an appearance.
Anyone?

What size is the 8-point opening? Measured for a square nut.

The part number follows early Caterpillar, but nothing shows up in a search. (number-letter-number-number-number) later on they added another number just after the letter, so 4Y187 became 4Y0187.

I guess I never thought about that Proto tools might be collectable. I have a 12" adjustable wrench that I keep in my 'frequent use' tool bag.
The other adjustable wrench is an 8" Crescent. I have had each for years, and use them rather frequently.

The Plumb/Plomb lawsuit was in 1946. It doesn't seem like Proto after 1946 would make a wrench for 10+ year old vehicles. But then I dunno.

You make a great point Frank. However, even Craftsman has the 8 pt double end 1/2 x 7/16 brake wrench in V series which was what, 50’s-60’s.

One thing that can’t be denied is nearly every brand had the double end wrench in 8pt or square format for these old vehicles. I don’t have it in me to look through catalogs for dates though.

When I saw these I wanted some. I‘ve been known to do some fishing. I finally found some listed at a fairly reasonable price. They arrived yesterday. IMG_8489.jpegIMG_8490.jpegIMG_8491.jpeg

This looks fantastic, Don

... Adding to the mental list of the things I want... (but not at the e-bay prices: somebody is hoping to get $1900 for 2 NOS pairs).

What is that wavy matte finish ratchet?
That is a ratchet that I purchased from a website that basically deals exclusively with bike tools and parts, etc.....they are called Birzman.

When I first came across their website (because of my KONA DEW PLUS bike) I was curious about their tools, etc. so I purchased the ratchet, a set of wrenches and a couple of their sockets on what they had available…..they do not carry a full line of tools just a few.

I really love the ratchet it’s a 1/2” and handles well, especially with it's ergonomic handle in your hand when using, etc…..as for the other tools, they’re just as good.👍🏽

I do apologize for the silly question...
What resource(s) do you guys use to date the tool? Thee date code on my wrench is H-2-1.
I would be more than happy to look it up, but I am not finding much in the way of the information I am looking for. Being this is a 'S' and made in LA, I think it was a 50s manufacture.
Can someone share the older date code site with me?

Thanks!

The last number indicates the date of manufacture on the Danielson design adjustables before and after the purchase by the Plombpire. Other details indicate the decade.

The only significant Proto item I have other than a few odds and ends is this puller set I bought/rescued from a home based shop that was going to be razed for "progress/development" in a nearby city.
