So the van got collected.

£220.00 delivery fee for 89 miles.

Drivers flatbed blew a turbo 15 miles from here.

An hour later he drove the Škoda onto my yard. Kudos to him.

My lodger Michael was on hand and also proved to be a very capable camera man.

So a walk around video recorded.

More details to come in the next video when I start cleaning it all up.

Sarah the widow brought me an old hardwood patio table today.
Came with a request
That I make some legs for the garden sign I made for her months ago.
Of course I didn’t stop there.
To her frustration.
But the squeal of delight was rewarding enough once she saw it completed.

Used some very rusty 8mm steel rod, some old spanners cut to size.

Welded up the legs as well as the snail, and mounted it all.

Well done sir!

Thank you.

I love when people like here use me and I then payback by making them wait and understand my time is not magical for stuff just being ordered and collected.

So her frustration was a great reward.

Made her sit down at the garage when I was working.

XxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxX

George was a ******** last night as well.

Literally last night….. :;

He didn’t approve of me cutting lumps of fur off his bum.

I think I get what you are saying ? Like, you do stuff for people out of the goodness of your heart , for FREE , sometimes it is VERY time intensive, you might use a lot of your consumables ( welding rods , nails, screws, sandpaper etc) and it is either :
1) not acknowledged with even a "thank you"
2) there is A COMPLAINT about : a) the time it took b) you forgot to sweep up some sawdust c) can you come back next week my favourite show is on and the noise is very annoying, Can't you be any quieter ?
3) you accidentally slightly damaged a plant and you are told you need to pay for its complete replacement

I think a lot of us have "been there done that"
In my case , I fixed a 40 foot section of shared wooden fence with one of my neighbours. It involved digging a bunch of holes beside the current posts that were "waving in the breeze" , installing posts parallel to existing and bolting to old posts. Then , install 40 new palings , re-use an equal or more number that had become loose or broken to replace the relevent palings , nail everything back together.
Over 500 galvanised nails , 10 bags of concrete, 40 palings, 10 x 6 foot posts that I paid for. My neighbour is a pensioner , like me, but doing it tougher so when he offered to pay half ( as he really should ) I said " no , that's ok just a bottle of beer or two will do just fine.
So, almost a year later , and not even one bottle of beer.
So , I do get it Grizz, but pardon me for my candour here - there is no joy in making any sort of point in this situation by attempting to "punish" the offender. I will move on to people who appreciate my help , and no longer give the time of day to those who do not . JMHO !!

Absolutely agreed.

Remember that fire grid I made from some 10mm steel for another woman?
I injured myself to the extent of my thumb still throbbing 8 months later another fully recovered.
She brought a bottle of red wine as a thank you, I declined it as I don’t drink wine, telling her she could have it back, to which her response was “I don’t need it back, someone gave it to me” COW !!!

But I don’t learn.

Obviously.

After the “high” of the delivery day (Evening) , came the bright light of day the next day.

I had actually closed shop the moment Michael and I were done with looking at the wheel arch extension in the last post and video.

So I had my mug of morning tea and breakfast, after which I went down to start the Cube, now known as Spartacus and then reversed it back up to the house for unpacking the parts in the rear and pressure washing the outside and the inside of the load-bed and canopy.

I had to go to town and did a few other jobs as well before I could get back to Spartacus

Eventually I got back home and resumed my discovery journey. Unpacking and pressure washing it all. The keen zoomers will notice that I skipped the center part of the canopy or cap roof as the American contingent says because I was tired (time frames moved about a bit)

Cleaning stuff always allows you to look a bit more closely at what you’re working with. One can see old signwriting residue and it reads with the details of a painting and decoration company in a previous life.

Mickey came around tutting and was not overly impressed.

There were shelves fitted in the rear that unfortunately meant that the photos in the ad did not show just how bad the rear shock towers are rotten away.
On inspection they seem to have been repaired twice before. Plates welded over plates. Fist sized holes rusted right through. I was absolutely gutted at seeing just how bad it is rusted away.
At this point, Michael my lodger came back from work. So he and I removed the painters shelves, exposing just how badly this is actually rusted away.

Of course I then removed the hard but broken plastic floor lining as well…… exposing even more chaos and trauma for myself.

Big parts of the unseen, and under the floor protector floor are rusted completely through and three to four fingers will easily fit through the floor holes. I have not bothered taking more photos of those discoveries.

At this point I realised Caveat Emptor was a very real thing. I failed on the Buyer Beware warning that surrounds any business deal. I failed to ask for more information, photos or a video walk around. I failed to research these little oddities more. I failed to drive the 90 miles to go look at the little van that……. [ put in your own caption here ]
I am not sure if I would have bought it today, 10 days after agreeing to buy it on the 8th of May (my brothers birthday) armed with the knowledge I now have and having inspected it on my drive.

The point is, The seller was a good salesman (I actually complimented him on that) he never withheld any information that I asked for. I don’t think he had seen or inspected the vehicle in the 9 years it lived inside the body shop where they had done some of the easier work on the body to a pretty ****** standard imho. (YES I HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY THIS, GO LOOK AT THE RUST REPAIRS ON MY C10 RESTO. IT IS PURE METAL ON ALL BUTTED JOINTS AND REPAIRS) and whoever did the rear turret MOT repairs previously should get a hot lead enema. Criminally badly done.
Replacement Patch panels are available at £250.00 each. You are welcome to sponsor me for a pair of them.

So the video and photos will give you an idea as to why this car has been named SPARTACUS

Video link:

So I cleaned out the van on 12 May and today is 19 May.

I am expecting a £70.00 cylinder of Argon/CO2 mix gas delivery today. Also ordered some “Tip Dip” because I am not expecting this job to be quick and easy.

The scrap man and crusher are still firmly in the front of my mind. Seriously.

I have actually been quite crestfallen by this whole thing. But giving up is unfortunately not really clearly written in my DNA.

SPARTACUS WILL RISE AGAIN
It may just be a matter time.
I will not decline help here.
Don't be a **** with dickish suggestions. They don’t help and just make you look like a *****.
Is that a harsh comment?
I guess if you have been at the receiving end of these, you would recognise them.
So in order to muster up some courage and try build some relationship with SPARTACUS I decided to go do some more cleaning over three days. Seriously, I was that disinterested that I only managed a couple of hours at a time.
Photos.

Just a random out of sync picture. Repair panels are available from Slovakia

I have had messages from this seller about them

But I certainly don’t have the money to spend on them at this point

Hello, I would like to list the prices of the parts separately, the silencer mounting, one piece, 110 euros, then the complete one, including the silencer mounting and the inner fender, the price per piece is 240 euros, and then there is also the complete floor for the body, which costs 250 euros as a whole, and of course the parts can also be sent to you on delivery, as long as it is there, plus we send by post to the world, since we are a company.

In Slovakia, such cars cost around 15,000 euros in good condition, worse ones cost less, but we have everything from the ground up for your model. If you would like, I can send you complete prices and list the prices of individual parts.

So once you add shipping, **** taxes and duties……..

Who knows what the landed price may be.

Finding an unrusted donor to cut up is probably not going to be easy.

Well having suffered from the same affliction, of cheap price and the sirens song, calling to a new project, my thinking, set it aside and if time grows before you decide to return to it you'll know the answer.

Alternatively, when I have to make a decision that I am unsure about I write heads-keep, tails-goes away on a pad. Then I flip a coin and if the 1st flip drives me to do best 2 out of 3 I know what the true decision will be.

Best of luck, I watch with interest.....

I've had that happen on a few occasions on smaller items than a vehicle. The up side is, if anyone can fix it, you can. Also, it will be done correctly. Even if you have to spend a little on it you can just keep it longer and use the heck out of it to offset the bad taste in your mouth that you have for it right now.

👎 with commentary

Those pictures show the stuff you can see. If those panels are that badly rusted and have been repaired a couple of times previously, i know there is other damage yet to be seen. I bet the frame is toast as well. Sorry Rian.......

Perhaps tip of the iceberg!

Rian
Sometimes in life cutting a loss can be considered a gain as one does not throw more money away!

Can you recover anything from parting the car? Is there a market for this brand in UK and hence for it’s parts? For example the engine sounded good, transmission, electronics, accessories etc. How much would salvage yard pay for the steel?

But knowing you just a bit, any discouragement will fire you up to prove all of us naysayers wrong 😀! Grizz is always up to a challenge no matter the magnitude of the challenge!

Either way, best of luck and we are here to cheer you on.

Just sitting there and looking pretty—that does not cut it!😀

At the very least, as a token of appreciation, something like 'How about I buy you dinner?' would be a nice gesture!

😍

Gut punch ?

I think it’s ultimately repairable

Nice thing and not nice thing of course is rarity.

Means a parts search will be challenging

But their value continues to climb.

Both the VW scene boys and collectors (they exist) will have an interest in owning it once it has been repaired to a decent standard.

Plus one ?

Oof indeed ! I see your oof and raise you a huge ouch!

LOL.

Don’t worry I have plenty of resolve.

Perhaps tip of the iceberg!

Hi Rian, could you use a similar style strut structure from a different car? Not sure if you could walk around a car wrecking yard and have a look at some wagons or FWD cars, may provide some of the curves you then patch into your car.
Regards Warren

Perfect.

Been in my head all week.

See my update below.

@cortina64 That is a great idea. VW super beetle strut towers are available and less than $50 each!

Indeed.

But even $50.00 each is expensive in “Grizzworld”

All about perspective ehhh.

Just to put this all into a time frame and perspective.
I have only paid for transportation to my place.
Unfortunately the seller went to get the V5c ownership document and found it was missing. Presumed in storage. Storage did not deliver the document. So online application was filed. Once he has a replacement copy he will then transfer ownership into my name and get a bank transfer for an amount barely enough for a European City Break and two lines of cocaine.

In the meantime, after pressure washing Spartacus and having a nervous breakdown about what I found, I decided to make space and park it up in the carport for future reference.

It has given me a week in which to calm down to a mild panic and formulate a plan of attack to try resurrect Spartacus

I did go see if the towbar mechanism was working. Penetrating oil and a big hammer only resulted in more stress, frustration and a big pile of rust that the vibrations had removed.

Although completely stupid and preemptively, I am going to see if I can find a local ( 40 mile radius ) scrapyard that will let me harvest some random rear wheel and suspension arches to use in attempt no1 of the reconstruction process. Curved and cupped sections are a pain to stand and bash out on a sandbag or in my case, hollowed out tree stump.

I have spoken online to someone who tried making his own replacement parts and failed, went over to collect them and brought them back.
Pics of his attempt and final results.

I think they have a major design flaw in that three piece unit.

And somewhere between zero and minimal seam sealing or structural integrity that resulted in movement of parts, allowing for sufficient water and corrosion inducing chemicals to enter.

Go look at this video by Albert in Spain.

He does some good stuff but is open about this one being a bodge job to just use it as a functional tool. stick welder? 😉

Their standard is way below my level of acceptable, but it’s allowed me some learning too.

And that’s perfect.

Look at how little rust there is in these rear arches from SPAIN where the roads are not salt or chemically treated for winter. But there is rust.

School of YouTube

We all learn here

I have a personal rule which is also a challenge !

Cost of the restoration can not exceed more than 50% of the cost of acquiring the item (this does not include the cost of material that I already have on hand) ,

Here is a trivial example. I love and collect (and also use) US made tools. Some years back I bought an old US made Milwaukee hammer drill from a garage sale for $5.

I had all the materials that I needed to rewire the drill including wires, contact brush, power cord, etc as well as cleaning and paint supplies. However the drill was missing the side handle. There was an original handle in excellent shape for sale on evilBay for $26. Which was not exactly going to break or make me! But was against the rule and principle!

I had a piece of aluminum rod but needed the grip! So I broke the bank and spend a whopping $1 for a suitable bicycle handle 😀 and made the handle myself.

I have included photos of just a few of the other examples as well.

Along the same lines, other things that make no sense to me are like $3k wheels on 1k car (visit Detroit and you will see what I mean 😀) , $45k Andersen front door for a $450k house ( but yes for a $2M house), etc.

Well my day didn’t work out as planned.

No donor metal found or bought.

But I did go out with the Oldsmobile to a local car show 30 minutes from here.

Made possibly the dirtiest unedited video ever.

Pedro brought me some Gunk engine cleaner.
Spartacus’ engine certainly needs it.
Of course I have no clue what the relationship between pressure washer, engine cleaner and a diesel engine is.

Advice, warnings and tips gladly received.

Dirty video.

Firstly- nice projects, and they look great !
That is an interesting rule that you have set for yourself and I do agree - at least for me- I have to control my enjoyment of perfection - especially if a) it is unachievable or b) it is not in any way, shape or form ( even if you squint) relevant to the object in question eg : why would a restored old vice/vise need a perfect paint job when tomorrow you are going to beat the be*esus out of it ?
I have a different rule for myself although I hadn't internally verbalised it to myself until I read your post. That is : *try* not to spend more on it than the enjoyment you will get out of it. I do agree I am somewhat fiscally irresponsible on this issue. But , YOLO, YMMV !!!
edit: oh , of course c) don't spend next weeks grocery money on your project :yikes: (y)

To be honest, now you have also made me think why do I have this rule and what do I mean by challenge.

The rule is not just based on financial considerations. It is also not just in the context of projects etc. For me, it is more so about sense of balance and concept of proportionality and mismatch in life. The spoiler/wing on a Porsche 911 Turbo S looks natural and projects a sense of belonging! How does the same wing look on a Toyota Corolla? To me it looks stupid!

The rule is also about the challenge. What is challenge and sense of personal accomplishment in just throwing money at some project (even if one can very easily afford to do so) ? My personal enjoyment from working on a project is primarily driven by overcoming a challenge (regardless of the fact that what is a challenge for me might be a joke for some else to overcome)!

Now, I will get off my soapbox and stop writing drivel! Sorry for wasting your time😀 .
