It's funny, but I studied trim carpentry under some pretty crusty old souls who taught me the trick to good trim carpentry was "Whenever possible, don't measure, mark in place. When you can't mark in place, use a story pole." Words to live by. Bonus: it's faster, too.Definition of woodworking:
Buy top quality wood.
Plan the project down to the 1/32"
Measure the pieces, and cut to exact
sweep up the saw dust
go sit down and have a beer
Go back to the store and buy new top-quality wood
and start all over because you measured wrong!
As I once had to inform a friend when he was showing off his homeowner carpentry skills "There's no trim for the trim."
