I found these specialty pliers (for B-X armored electrical cable) at the flea market this morning, and it sent me down a research rabbit hole of fun for several hours. If you don't mind, I will post a bunch of history following this post...

Lugz, I found the twin to your pliers. I remember seeing you guys post up this thread last year and have been watching for that "gothic" logo every since. Thanks for all the work on the research, it was great reading that again.

I just picked up a mephisto #95 plier (for a dollar). i also have 2 mephisto 8" flat blade screwdrivers in nice shape. I'm in Michigan and i just dont see the brand around here. i notice that the nuts that secures the pliers halves appears the same as the ones channelock used prior to going to the riveted style "perma sumpin or other.

The No. 95 pliers are substantial, for their size. I have a pair of No. 96 as well.

The grips are different, but otherwise the shapes are quite similar.

Mephisto tools are scarce around here as well.

Haven't seen any hammers mentioned.

Here's a Mephisto ball-peen I found today.

I attach a couple of photos of tools that I got from my father’s workroom when he passed. He had undoubtedly gotten them from his grandfather-in-law, my great-grandfather. You see, Charles Stuart Elder, “Gampy” to me, had been the president of Mephisto tools. Or at least that is what I always heard. I believe that he started as a bookkeeper and eventually was in charge. My mother – who turns 90 next month- remembers playing in the factory when she was a little girl and the cats they had, etc. She would go there on the occasional Saturday. Amazingly, despite being born in New Jersey, grown up in White Plains, NY, and raised a family in CT, she is back now in Clifton Park NY quite close to Hudson as she is near my sister.
I have actually had the occasion to get the chisels out and use them and I can tell you that they still work. I think that she will get a kick out of the fact that these are still prized.

Thanks, Private. It looks, however, that after all this time, they may have gone out of business. I suppose that they would not be the first little tool company to do this but I was hoping to visit the old factory if we were ever able to travel again. Doug

Yes, Wallace Metal Works of Kempton PA may be the one making these now though a couple of others use the name as well. I will have to write them.

My first Mephisto tool. A screwdriver looks to be part number or model number 481. I had never heard of this brand or seen any of their tools till I went to the pawn shop on my birthday last Friday and this was there so I picked it up. Probably never will use it probably will go in the tool collection bin.

Picked up No95 slipjoints today. I think I may have a linesmans somewhere - not sure. Going to give these guys the spa treatment. I picked them up because I thought they were Utica 511 slipjoints.

FWIW (assuming there’s no-one left who needs convincing), Lugz’s early assertions about Utica being OEM for Mephisto pliers seem spot-on to me. Not just pliers, but Numan’s 10” adjustable wrench is a dead-ringer for a Utica 90-10.

Only caution I’d introduce is, several regional manufacturers made similar-looking products (I mean similar among their many products - not across all products - and not necessarily similar to Mephisto) from time to time. I’ve been fooled by PS&W, JPDanielson, Champion DeArment, Crescent, Kraeuter, Smith&Hemminway, etc.
Wouldn’t that be a creepy crossover? - Mephisto/Red Devil!
Maybe they shared dies, maybe employees, maybe they conspired to create industry standards
Anyway, I’ve seen more diversity among 511s than between this 511 and this 95.

^ I would say you've got a match there (notwithstanding one of them is missing a small forging mark.)
Hudson, New York doesn't appear to be very far away from Utica.

I've maintained since I joined here that the outsourcing of tools from other manufacturers was an industry-wide practice since the beginning, so I wouldn't be at all surprised.

It continues to this day on a massive scale: A&E manufactures all kinds of stuff for Snap-on, Proamerica supplies pliers to Proto, Wilde is selling pliers to Tekton and others, ad infinitum. So why not Utica to Mephisto?

A few weeks ago I was watching an American Pickers re-run (Season 21, Episode 8, which aired on 1/20/2020 originally), in which Mike raided a hardware store that was being closed down in LaSalle, Illinois. Near the end of the show, the owner comes out with a box of these black beauties! They look to be 11" OAL "perfect handle" type drivers with possibly Bakelite handles and ornate markings. OEM unknown. I contacted both of their stores by email to inquire if one was available for sale and I was told, "We don't have that item in our inventory." When I asked if that meant they sold them all, or if it was possible they hadn't even been processed for sale yet I got no reply. I was hoping to be posting an example of the real McCoy, but these photos snagged off the tv screen will have to do. They were never held still for long enough to get a good photo of the entire tool. Possibly the most gorgeous screwdrivers I have ever seen.

Missed that one I guess, never seen a screwdriver look so good since I was twenty four and mixed them in a Snap-On mug after work.

I got these pliers at an estate sale last week. They have the feel of a quality tool, and the cutting jaw is in good shape. After cleaning, I could read Mephisto. Never heard of it. After seeing this thread, I'm excited to add it to my plier collection.

My first recent Mephisto acquisition. Out of the Kennedy box I've posted in GS, Came with a Red Devil too, but I must have about a dozen of them kicking around from every toolbox I've bought. I've got an auger bit or two kicking around somewhere.

Nice find. For a name that was around as a brand of the Ives company from 1909 through 1937 (the fancy font examples), and then as a company name through at least the 1980's, it just doesn't show up that often.

They are still around, they have a website.

I have a few caulking irons (newer font, not script) from the used tools store.

Hello Folks, I came across this thread while searching for info on these items I have. They are not tools, and I'm not exactly sure what to call them. Artist proof? Anyway, Maybe some help on someone somewhere that could give me more background. Thanks, Mark

Wow! I suspect they were proofs, indeed, for Mephisto catalogs and advertising. That's gorgeous and quite the find. Vintage tool collectors go nuts for ancillary stuff like that to accentuate displays. I, for example, would prop that up in a display case behind the tools. How many sheets like that are there in the folder?

The envelope is dated 1928.

I could be wrong, but it looks like that annotation on the bottom right of the punch page proof is identifying the font used on the Mephisto name - which we've talked about often and with superlative admiration on this thread - as "Electro".

Private, I have 11 boards total. 9 boards are complete with the adddress cover sheet, 2 are just an image of a chisel and no cover sheet. I had forgotten, but came across some "Hard Test" Tools catalogs I have, from Nicholls Tool Co. Inc. Lemont, Illinois that have some of the drawings in it. I noticed that on a couple of the items, they have the "Hard Test" name and the "Mephisto" name. I'm not sure why that is. Maybe they were bought out before final approval?? Just a guess. I can take more complete pictures but I don't want to make a spectacle. Let me know , thank you.

Wow. That's terrific. The punches are fabulous.

I'm not familiar with either name. What is the date of the catalog?

Some kind of third party relationship. I noticed the Mephisto branding is not the fancy font, which I always thought came much later.
I can take more complete pictures but I don't want to make a spectacle.
Making a spectacle is pretty much what we do around here! :) On top of that, Mephisto catalogs are in short supply. I don't think are any in the public domain spaces, such as Internet Archive, and the only one I have ever seen glimpses of was for sale on eBay for extortive, grotesque sums. Meaning, even if what you had wasn't artsy, we'd be interested just for the information value. So, you're certainly welcome and encouraged to post as many of them as you want. I know I am curious to see what the other tools are. My dad did some hyperrealistic airbrush advertising artwork in school, before he went into the Navy during WWII, industrial and household items (sparkplugs and umbrellas, for example) that I greatly admire, so I have an extra special interest.

Internet Archive does not show any Mephisto Tool Co catalogs, but if you change the search from Metadata to Text Contents, there are a couple distributor catalogs carrying illustrated Mephisto Tool lines.
Here’s an example.

I hadn't run that search in quite some time, LS, and it never seemed to be early (your example is from 1951, for example), but lo and behold, it just turned up the 1938 Mephisto Tool Co catalog! That's the first time I have seen it. Several of Mark's proofs are included. It was uploaded in October 2019, somehow eluding searches.

I just downloaded a 1938 Mephisto catalog at ITCL yesterday while searching for something else.
HERE: https://archive.org/details/mephistotoolspricelist1938

Markshreck - we would love the spectacle of seeing the rest of your catalogs.
For that matter, it would be even better if you could get the material to International Tool Catalog Library.
Of particular interest is that "Nicholls" catalog - a company none of us have heard of before.

Ah-ha - I was getting zero results within IA Catalogs Collection. A search of the whole IA site leads to the right catalog. 1938 is a good year to have access to.

Lets Flag @Mark Stansbury, as his wizardry might be able to flag it into the ITCL
