I am 2 hours SW of you. We got 4-5" of snow then 5-6" of sleet on top. I have a 40 hp 4wd tractor with a 6' bucket. All I could do was scoop up a bucket full and then dump it somewhere. I could not push it at all. Took me 2 hours to clear the concrete off my two car garage approach and parking area. Picture is my back door. I had a ski ramp that ran to my storm door and was at least 18" up the door. Those blocks all came off my steps. The worst stuff I've ever had to move.1000002947.jpg

I've used a loader to clear my driveway before -- really time consuming at best. But a good amount of snow takes 8 hours to clear (long driveway), so I use an ATV with a plow. The only way to stay ahead of this storm was to plow during the sleet and the rain, before it froze. The next day, my plow couldn't touch the ice in neighbors' drives -- the entire ATV just bounced back from hitting the ice.

I'm a couple hours east of you guys, and the freezing rain made everything a skating rink here. I can walk on top of 10" of snow everywhere in the yard without breaking through. This is so much worse than snowmageddon a few years ago.

Yup.
I'm 230, been carrying a 5 gal bucket of water in each hand, so 300#, down to barn, walking on top of ice crust over snow. Didn't break thru until yesterday, and only every 3rd or 4th step, to make it really interesting.

Saw a guy ice skating on a soccer field Monday...

We too experienced the ice over snow in NOVA. I had cleared the driveway once before the freezing rain and sleet came. I had to use a spade to break up the ice layer and then the snow shovel to clear it. What a pain! My front stoop still has 2 feet of drifted snow on it that never gets the sun. It will be there for months. Here's a picture looking out the front window with a pile of frozen snow.....

Yup. It was a blast to move. Last week when my almost all-day meetings would end I would go outside and chip away some more of the snow in front of our cars or neighbors sidewalks. Seemed a flat bottom metal garden shovel was the best way to go about things. I don't think I've seen a clear turn lane.

Yeah so the drops were a tussle - "way more than we had discussed" via the builder. Plus cost wise for the cameras I get decent coverage and I can adjust angles to fine tune. Was not really a privacy issue just a what can I get away with without a lot of noise.

Agreed on the mount high - but some areas not much choice unless I want them hanging off a wall, which I think would look bad. I currently have 4 cameras mounted up about 40 feet at my townhouse - it's a set and forget type deal without a sectional.

So the electrician pulled Cat6 so that is good. I can deal with the switches later. I did not budget for $10k in LAN/Security gear and $10k for speaker/sound gear - so that may be a baby step thing. LAN first, obviously.

This Ring camera has been hanging tough - literally with a massive icicle on it. I need to find a away to defeat the icicle without it tearing down the camera. It is about 35 feet-ish up

PXL_20260202_151915518.jpg

And this one - massive. Hopefully the gutter hangs on.

PXL_20260202_151911721.jpg

Right - my initial concern was the cable if CAT 5/6 is capable regardless of power demand.

I will have to calculate for the switch - again, was trying to carve out wiring for the electrician since they want inspections done, insulation, then drywall. I need to figure out fireplaces and cabinets next.

So good research on the TV - I still ran cable to them but will check the specs. Likely a 90" for the family room and slightly smaller for the bedroom. I need to figure out motion/refresh rates for TV's that size. The 75" Samsung I got last year is ok - not great for sports/racing etc. Movies are fine in 4k so might not be the TV's fault.

I just need to get motivated to tidy these projects up before they head west. Dreaming about a heated/cooled garage with endless space/lifts for projects won't get things done now. Weather is **** here so moving stuff around is hard - and the garage is packed. I did set an internal rule for myself in terms of all vehicles need to be driven west vs. trailer even the FZ6 :ROFLMAO: so that is motivating.

You can always add another switch right? Do they fail? Wonder if they will do the Superbowl in 4k, I think they did last year?

Yes have 4 of them - using the memory cards also helps IMO. I do reboot them every once in a while since I don't feel they are good on that on their own without a power down or they pick inopportune times to reboot - when they start getting squirrely its time for a reboot.

I might look into the Google TV device.

In other news the battle of the "Snowcrete" continues almost two weeks later. I am on the HOA board and folks are getting heated.

In our neighborhood part of it is VDOT snow removal and part is private contractor. VDOT never showed up. People don't understand that in a once in a 10 year storm VDOT are trying to keep major arteries open. I drove from Leesburg VA to DC the other day and it is sketch, everywhere. 3 lanes at 70MPH suddenly reduce to 1 single file trail that looked like a 5 year shoveled - be patient. Conditions are still bad all over. You can't move this stuff with a plow you need heavy equipment, even Bobcats with treads are having a tough time.

Issue is/was it snowed about 8-10" in most areas, some got a foot or more but the tail end of the storm was ice - like 3 to 4 inches of ice which made it concrete to move, then temps never budged.

@cccoltsicehockey was looking at your plow pics and wondering how your setup would have worked here?

I was out shoveling (still) this past weekend and talked with this guy for a bit. Hard to tell in the picture but he had a wad of tissue stuffed up his nose and still bleeding. He said he had the cab window cracked for air and a piece of ice flew in and smacked him on the face. Whole cab was ****** but he soldiered on. He had been working double shifts for 10 days.

PXL_20260128_185105912.jpg

Poor guy was like "can you just tell your HOA we are doing the best we can - I know there are tons of complaints and it falls on us"

Yes! I can do that -

Screenshot_20260129-174543.png

Anyway the Karen's are rampaging - temps here never got above freezing since the storm hit and lows in the single digits, schools closed for 8 days - even this week all/most schools on a two hour delay for the rest of the week.

I thought I would hate the camera I mounted on the wall but it almost disappears. I wish I would have installed my two highest cameras that way at this point. If you do PTZ with zoom though it will help some other than not being able to see faces correctly.

I hear you. The network and camera gear is not cheap. If you pass on Sonos you can do it a bit cheaper though.

Good on you for sticking up the the snow guys. Almost no one is ever happy with them and they definitely have a tough job.

Safe to say everyone loved the snowcrete! :ROFLMAO: I will say it came up to about 45 yesterday and it felt downright hot. All relative. Looks like a bit of a warming trend coming.

Do you have some pictures in your thread for the wall mounted ones? I am not exactly sure where they are mounting mine I just sent a diagram of the corners of the house.

i highly recommend you check out jukeaudio.com!

Yes was looking - but no subs and $440 for 4, 8 inch speakers, that sounds really cheap? No soundbar option either. Sonos are $1000 for 2. Comparo below.

Huge difference on price!

Yeah, Juke makes a nice looking system. Dayton does as well. https://www.parts-express.com/Dayto...aO47bMC9eiGEYCRjIffCBz_PZdkYAR1Lt8ds2nKjSgjU4

Wiim is the only one that makes a true Sonos competitor, unless you want to have a sound bar integrated into your system of wireless control, and then no one touches Sonos.

Compatibility - willing to pay more for less hassle - all works and talks without fettling. I prefer to pay more to push the easy button or wait until I can. Amps, speakers, sub, sound bar - seems like Sonos.

I don't think I would have wall mounted controls - I think back to the 80's and 90's with the stereo feature in the wall with in house intercoms in each room - relics from the past :)

Just like for the car, I would choose something I can work from my phone vs separate interface.

So the Rolex 24 - good times.

I hit Daytona & Pocono numerous times in the mid-80s seeing Al Holbert's Lowenbrau Special, Bob Akin's #5 Coca-Cola car, along with the Kreapy Krawler car.....what a time to see these cars. I also got in many times being friends with an associate of Jim Downing and the Mazda he ran in the same series.
So they bring some of those cars out for the HSR (Historic Sportscar Race) which is integrated with the Rolex 24. Its a real race with qualifying etc. just a handful of laps though before the 24 starts the morning of. They had some cool ones this year. The sounds and flames are glorious.

More here:

IMSA Rolex 2026-491.jpg

We did a little racing ourselves when we where there although karting style at K1 speed. The one in Daytona has an elevated track which is pretty cool. We did 3, 12 lap sessions - man I was cooked afterward. The kids wanted to go more.

PXL_20260124_000851826.jpg

My oldest is seriously quick - never heard the end of beating me by a few tenths...this was a really grippy track without much sliding. Karts were quick also, usually you just floor it the whole time but these you had to use the brakes for setting up a corner - loads of fun.

PXL_20260124_012811956.jpg

Dad, the loser of course had to cover Waffle House at 2am...teenagers.

PXL_20260126_033905107.jpg

Life choices...

PXL_20260125_142702908.jpg

So the storm hit Saturday and we flew home Monday and even 2 days after - we arrived at the airport to the wall of red death...

PXL_20260126_175208256.jpg

Flight was delayed about 6 hours total but did manage to get home that night.

In other news -

The Luna wood is starting to get installed. Definitely benefiting from the light winter out west, no plow costs and the trades have been able to finish up and move out. I believe insulation is this week with drywall to follow after.

Rain screen installed on the rest - so basically all black is Luna Wood and the green is all stone with the exception of the fireplaces which will be all stone.

Here is a distant picture of it. You would not at all need to do large box I did. I did it to hold the extra cable I had pulled and I wanted to get it up and that is all they had locally. You would not need that at all and could mount it on the surface with the wall coming out the wire. This camera is at 10ft. Personally, I don't really notice it. You could also get it in black to match your windows and other black accents outside.

Sonos makes a great product! You don’t have to buy the Juke speakers, I bought mine elsewhere and paid a lot less. Everything on the Juke system is run from my Spotify app- volume and music

Are you using their amp?

That wood looks amazong with the dark windows!

Thanks!

That looks good - yes, I am likely to go all black on anything exterior

Daytona looks like a great time. Some year I need to make that a priority trip. Love me some karting. It will definitely wear you out though.

The luna wood looks fantastic. The contrast of it with the black windows and black metal roofing is amazing. Nice choice.

Thanks - yes, you need to do Daytona - all things sports cars and all makes. You could probably drive as well 7 hours?

So they are making good progress on the Luna wood - will be nice to see the stone with it this spring.

Yep, I bought one when we’re at your stage of our house build. It has been great for us— each zone is separately controlled or you can make what they call groups. The kids love it- they pull out their phones and can play whatever they want in their specific bedrooms.

Nope, I’m in the world of finance. Just a fan of their product.
I am this way with Ubiquiti. I get nothing out of it but I recommend it to everyone as for me at least it has been flawless since installed. You are actually the first person I have seen with experience with Juke. I almost installed it in my mom's house a couple years back but she decided in the end she only needed two zones so to keep it simple we use a multi zone home theater receiver. That way they could have sports game audio easily on the backporch when cooking without needing to use a second device.

It sounds like you need an animatronic owl now to do more scaring.

Thanks! I think its actually a little lighter than some of the photos indicate. That stack of lumber has been sitting since late October so it likely is holding moisture. So the stuff on the right in this pic was up about 2 weeks to dry out vs. the stuff on the right. Also I gave thumbs down on the corner trim piece - those are being removed. More work but looks better with no corner trim IMO.

IMG_20260204_173512.jpg

So the owl is/was animatronic - solar did not keep up with the -10 temps for the battery so it is dead now without a recharge, even then it did not do much. I need to rethink the bird strategy.

Nope, I’m in the world of finance. Just a fan of their product.

Got it! Finance is not my jam, good on you.

So I think for outdoor audio going to go with something to carry vs. installed speakers. I have them on my deck and never use for them whether grilling or hot tub - the Bose Thudbucket sounds really good so likely will get something like that or the SONOS carry around.

Nice call on the black trim removal. It will look great with a wood corner detail even if it means some more labor time to get it right.

Thanks - agreed.

Thanks. Nice to hear there is another one of us in the area. There are several from the Charlotte and surround areas that I have run into on here.

We need an east coast GJ get together -

In other news -

House progress marches forward - received many of the detailed cabinet drawings. Posting to see if anyone has any "did you think about this or what about that "geeze that is dumb what gives..?." These are all custom so changes can be made - albeit post-haste.
The house is not that big so storage is everything - lots of cabinets and shelves etc.

Starting in the hallway to the spare bedrooms - two picture windows and a slider, each of the two windows will have a seat/nook etc. with lights for reading. Everything else on this entire wall is books and lots of them. My better half sometimes has two or three going at once and goes through 2-3 a week. I am calling these nooks my bourbon perch with lights, surrounded by books - most/all of which I did not read. Only 8 foot ceilings for this part of the house. I will try to do a current and future state to break up the monotony.

So these cabinets go here:

Current state -

3 stairs (and the only stairs in the whole house)

Best future state pic are the windows and slider to the left in this pic:

North West_1.jpg

This is the main living room wall with fireplace - outlets inside and outside of cabinets/shelves. For the TV (I think I can squeeze a 98 up there with a SONOS sound bar on the bottom - couch should be pretty far back) Countertops on top of main cabinets - all shelves should be adjustable.

So these go here:

Current state:

Future: Obviously much has changed is this pic...

An east coast GJ meet is a fantastic idea. We need to get on it, thoug,h before you are no longer and east coast GJ member ;)

I was really confused about the first cabinet layout until the actual hallway pictures so thanks for including those. The cabinet layouts all look good to me except for one thing. The first layout with the reading nooks really bugs my OCD with the fact that either cabinet #6 or 9 I can't tell with the character overlay, is not lined up with everything else. Maybe there is some necessary reason but I can't not see it right away.

I see that also - might be a mistake, will ask but those windows are on the same level plane so all should be lined up - or at least that is the plan.

Did someone say meet up? Im in!

Yeah we need to get something on the calendar. I will still be east coast for some time to come - family here, work etc.

Saw something cool the other day in the LoCo (VA) - I have heard about these but never saw one in person. Stout. Not a fan of LS conversions or a completely bodyworked shell - no rivets. Everyone does the LS but the chassis is ********. Wonder if they did any real world off road testing? Build is likely pushing $200k.

Looks like a regular Defender - but not. Chassis alone is a work of art...

Found this build in their gallery - anyway, sweet truck.

Moving on to more cabinets -

So this will be the back wall of the living room - not much wall space with the accordion slider setup. Basically same as the front wall setup with counter top etc. Still trying to work true surround sound. Not sure this will cut it since it is offset in the room. I did position the ceiling speakers so I "could" use two of those but not sure how effective in ceiling for a true surround experience.

back living room.jpg

Current view: cabinets to the right...

PXL_20251225_185756417.jpg

Best future view is all the way to the left and back: So that is the conundrum with true surround - could do wireless at the couch area but they need power so that is a no go.

For rear surround, if you are just trying to do 5.1 and not Atmos, I have heard people having good luck with something like this. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_0911HCLCR5/Focal-100-ICLCR-5.html?tp=193

The angled speakers help put the sound profile more down at the couch while also being truly behind you vs something direct overhead. I have also seen some pictures where people put those as your rears and still do Atmos in the ceiling above or to the side of the couch if you are trying to do a lot of extra channels. If you are running Sonos sound bar up front, I don't know how all of that would interconnect.

I took the liberty to put everyone's listed location into Google Maps to find the most central of those who have posted about a meetup. If a GJ member is to host and we don't just pick a random location out of @Nolift911, @Krfjkm, @Cdubu52, @fouckhest, @gearhead1960, @bunks-tj, and myself, @Cdubu52 wins the honor of most central location. If I missed someone, my apologies as the scrolling got me. Although, still a pretty big haul for the VA guys. A somewhat more central location might be to maybe attend some races at VIR one weekend.

VIR would be of interest. Been to a lot of East Coast tracks, but have never made it there, and would be willing to make the drive....
