My ten year old came to me this morning… “Hey Dad, you should watch this guy on YouTube. He makes videos like yours only he’s got more tools and is a little smarter.”

Have to admit – she’s not wrong. This guy kills every aspect of educational entertainment. And he does it with a style that I totally get. Maybe you will too?

Check it out:

Is this your first time seeing something about Jason? Get ready to go down the rabbit hole. He has a hell of a YouTube channel and makes some great products

I learned about him about 110 minutes ago... And I'm just starting my dive down that whole. Feel like I'm about to be very unproductive for a few days.

I love Popular Mechanics.

My brother and I convinced my dad and uncle to build the saucer hover craft one summer. It was featured in one of the issues. They built and my dad and uncle both rode it. Then my dad sat each of us in his lap and took us for a spin. When the day was done they took it apart. Later my dad and uncle said it was too dangerous.

Later in life, I was invited to our R&D group to discuss ideas. The presenter started showing us all these ideas they had. I kept on thinking I had seen most of these ideas before. Then realized they were showing us stuff from Popular Mechanics.

Thanks for posting this.

Dude is creative and a hell of a fabricator! I enjoy his latest series of Popular mechanics builds but not as much as the build series on his way over the top shop equipment he has done in the past. Also he offers quite a few really nice tools for fabrication work.

Kids! You gotta love ‘em. Your 10 year old may enjoy ”James May’s Toy Stories” on Amazon prime. He laments the state of todays children and how they don’t play with the toys that we did. I watch them with my grandson’s who are surprised how cool older toys can be.

I have a ton of his stuff.

I have added a lot since I took this photo. Very good customer service, plus I like to support an innovator.

Nice collection there! Where would you recommend getting started with? I was thinking a 8" Mega square and possibly the Minion squares. Just a hobbyist welder.

Terry,

I am just a hobbyist also. By far my most commonly used things are the 8" mega square (AL), the shim kit, and the 8" monster square (AL). I use those on almost every welding project.

I had to stop and make sure I didn't post this. I have pretty much the exact same setup of his square/shims. I am glad I am not the only one that has a problem :ROFLMAO:

I use the shims the most and would highly recommend them. I also have a fixture table so I dont use the squares for everything since the table will also square things up. As for the squares, I got aluminum for wood projects, and cast for steel. my 2cents, I think I would get the following in this order. 1) Shims 2) Minions 3) 12" Mega FE then 12" monster FE.

I had the pleasure of talking with Jason at Fabtech a few years ago. Nice guy, and very smart. His personality in real life is just like in the videos.

The only downside to the conversation was that I had no idea who he was in the moment. He seemed familiar, but I just couldn't figure out why and it kind of bugged me. A few weeks later, I was cruising YouTube and figured it out. The channel had only been around for a year or so when I met him, but I was subscribed and had seen a number of his videos. Probably for the best, I might have been more awkward than I normally am had I recognized him.

I posted a link to one of his videos about 2 weeks ago where he's testing vices and destroying them (including his own design) to see how far they can be pushed.

I question where he finds time to work on odd projects for what would take easily days/weeks. He builds a variety of tools, that alone is a very full time job! Making videos... another full time job.

Sure I think a propeller pedal bike is neat, but I'm not spending a week building one when I have 30 other things that need done, like working, cutting the lawn, sleep, etc

Well, he can pull it off. It's clear he's taking the Youtube thing serious.. he will make money off the vids the rest of his life. He also gets to advertise his wares. Its a win/win/win.

The bike thing is audacious and provides a lot of good material/techniques, and spans many interests/ages.

He blows other machinist/maker types out of the water as far as views... for good reason.

I realize that. Like I said, I question where he finds time to do it all.

I find he lacks modesty...if you ever see his "answering questions" on his second channel, he can't handle anyone questioning him.

His tools may be good, but compared to other makers (this old tony, stuff made here, etc.) he isn't as much of a person I'd want to be friends with.

Agreed. I like his content, super skilled, have a megasquare and will probably buy more, but once you notice his lack of modesty that's all you see in his videos
