Okj Bill started a thread to show off his new Buffalo drill press and Jabberwoki insisted we start a new thread to show off our cool " old " drill presses . Soooo I will kick it off with my 1959 Craftsman 15" floor model I picked up yesterday and will toss in a few pics of the 1959 Craftsman Bench lights I picked up at the same time :D.

Benchtop Atlas.

Hope to add a floor model one day but I seriously doubt it would be any handier than this one.

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Haven't started doing any restoration as yet, most of it is cosmetic, and figuring a "period" power switch arrangement:

Atlas made Craftsman bench top, ball bearing unit, late thirties, possibly early 40's. Love the "Long "C" Craftsman logo

It shouldn't have taken this long but a myriad of other projects, and life got in the way! Had a problem with the motor. Started smoking really bad. I thought the windings were fried but turns out I bent a switch inside when I put it back together, so it was staying engaged. Fixed that.

I installed an easy-to-access rocker switch in the head unit 'cause the original on/off switch was a thumb dial that was incorporated in the 60 year old power cord. Installed a new cord too. Basically, I just tore it down and cleaned everything up. Polished up all the shiny stuff on my buffer.

I still need to restore the X-Y vise that came with it and I have and idea and some parts for a speed reduction unit but right now, I have to go look at a CL MIG welder. So, enjoy the pics!

Im not redoing mine as long as it looks as good as it does now. I think it is from the fifties and it is all original including the finish. It does have this nasty tape mark right on the front shroud which is kind of an eyesore but hey, its character.

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Finally got a portion of my garage cleaned and my Buffalo 15" floor mounted drill press installed. Some photos follow. It has US Navy etched crudely in the head paint with some numbers. It has an Atlas 1/2 HP motor. It is a 5 speed DP, but a middle pulley and shaft are available to gtve it 8 speeds that are lower in range or a new 2 additional pulley system that gives more. It has a 0-1/2" Jacobs chuck. Someone put a lot of divots in the table.

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Several years ago I bought an old 20" Champion camel back drill press at a shop closing. Mechanically it was in pretty good condition, but cosmetically, it was in pretty sad shape so I did a complete teardown, clean up, refurb as needed, and repaint. It's old, heavy, and Grandma slow, ... but virtually unstoppable if the belts are tight.

Dsc01141gj1.jpg Dsc01144gj1.jpg Dsc01146gj1.jpg

The #5 tapered spindle will hold a maximum 1-1/2" bit. It has a power downfeed feature (small stepped pulleys visible in the right-hand views) with an auto reverse, but I've never had the courage to belt up and use the power downfeed. It has 8 spindle speeds ... 4 direct and 4 more via a backgear ... all driven by its original open frame motor with oil cups!

Watching this old girl drill a hole is a beautiful sight to behold!

Now THAT is the coolest old drill press. I have been reading up on them lately. You have the coolest combination including power feed and back gear!!! Those things will turn the biggest bits because they can run dead slow. And they are like tanks. If anyone knows of one that needs restoring, I want to know.

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Lots of cool DP's above!See if these pics work..........Alright then. The first had just enough "issues" that I snagged it for 200.Its a '52 W/T 1200 w/production table and pwr downfeed. The upper pulley cvr was broken....did a nice job welding that. The table lock handle was missing......took about a 1/2 hr to make a very close facimile...still missin the depth stop rod and "finger" that knocks pwr feed out. Will make it.....it gets used right much in cabmet shop.

The second is a W/T '47 radial drill.......rediculously clean,barely a mark on table.It has 32 speeds(16 from factory X 2,with two sp motor).It gets used alot.Was snagged off CL for beer money.

Vise on first was a freeby 'cause PO didn't know how to adj the quick lock and got all PO'd and just gave it to me.....OK.Its an 8" Heinrich

Vise on radial drill is one of a matching pr of German air/hyd Hilma's.The other stays on the BP.They were found in a dumpster and go for around 3k a piece.

If you look through the opening on W/T metal BS......theres a freeby, spotless P&W sensitive drill.I swear.....the brass shear pin broke that drives the spindle(5 min fix) and PO thought the whole thing was trashed,hence...free.

I have been obsessed with this thing ever since i first saw this posted, do i need a old drill press like this ? Of course not, Do i want one? hell yes. I would put that thing in my living room, at this point, i don't think the X wife would mind. I have been researching these and have started by putting out the feelers for one that needs love. My sources have told me they are hard to come by but do pop up on occasion, fingers crossed.

I blundered across this old rusty drill press sitting against a barn. The owner offered it to me for scrap value if I wanted it. I passed but thought it was interesting.

Awesome thread! Here's my contribution . . . '40s Buffalo No. 15 and '50s Dunlap. Both work, but both going under the knife (grinding cup) for restos soon.

Since this thread is at the top, what do you guys think about this.... http://bn.craigslist.org/tls/2604971229.html ?

Was thinking about checking it out.

That looks like a decent deal if the quill is tight and the bearings in the spindle are good. Looks like it has at least part of a mortising drill adapter on it over the chuck.

New (old) guy here, in fact first post. This is a wartime (WW2) version Delta 17 inch. I bought it in 1978 for 150 bucks, and rebuilt it then. It's been serving me well ever since!

Older Wards PowerKraft. Replaced the cord some years ago. It came with an older craftsmans grinder motor with a frayed cord ($10 frankensteined purchase). Some slop in the quill and driven pulley is cracked but I still occationally use this guy. Hope to recondition it someday.

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

After seeing the cool old "camel-back" press on this thread I found this one on the nearby CL. $80
It is a Mechanics Machine Co. of Rockford, IL 14" upright drill. Some minor pecker marks on the table and a welded bracket for the table raising handle.
Motor is toast. No automatic feeds. Needs an on off switch.
