So I have a pile of rough saw 1 x 6 x 12, have a concrete pad & thinking why not build a shed, had one there years ago. I'm thinking since the house has dutch lap vinyl why not mill some rough sawn into dutch lap? The shed would be 12 x 14 & I have plenty of material, now the question, what's the best way to mill it? I have a 3hp shaper, a powermatic 3hp ts, I'm thinking this may be too much for a hand router. Setting up a jig on the ts may be fast & doesn't require buying anything, but with the right cutter the shaper may do it a little better. Anyone ever mill any? I plan to set up the saw & make a few test cuts, see if I like the profile, may set up the shaper to cut the dado? Open to ideas & again this is a shed, close will be good enough but I still have to walk that line between perfection & production.

I'm gonna say pretty much like this,

I suppose, and that works for a piece. However it every edge cut that way needs scraped smooth and sanded to get rid of of the cross hatch.
It can be cut with the material on edge on a table saw with a molding head.

You would need a moulding head capable of a 1&3/4" depth of cut which would be a 7" head at minimum on a unisaw/pm66 type cabinet saw. The sears and delta heads are not that large.

I was thinking originaly on the ts, the wood is bandsaw milled so finish quality will be ok. I think the shaper is better suited for the job & I have a power feeder set up on it & the ts. But now I'm thinking of getting a moulder, good excuse as any to pick one up. I found a guy selling a shop fox 1812 which is a copy of a william & hussey, uses the same knives plus a few W & H machines out there. I aslo have a lot of seasoned poplar that is ready to be turned into moulding & casing I could use, lots of knife profiles available & custom ones aren't too bad cost wise.

Any thoughts on the shop fox w1812? Reviews seem pretty good, my wife is loving all the profile options, this could be an expensive rabbit hole.

I've heard good things, supposedly the v ways are a more ridgid design compared to the w&h. Price wise they are hard to beat, unless you find a used w&h.

Just ordered a shop fox W1812, seems like a good bang for the buck. Saw a few used ones but not enough of a savings, now to get some knife profiles ordered. I see I can get a shaper head that uses the same knives, might be a bonus when cutting multiple profiles.

If you get corrugated w&h knives you can run them on a shaper with a standard corrugated head.

W&h knife in a corrugated head.

You are going to be limited to smaller heads with your shapers (I wouldn't go bigger than a 2-3" tall head) the bearings are not made for it

That's what i figured, I like going the insert cutter route just never got to it. Now I may look for a bigger shaper, 5hp tilting arbor, not in a rush so I'll wait for a nice used one.

One thing you be aware of when using knives on both a shaper and the moulder is the hook angle difference between the two. The w&h is about 25 degrees where as most corrugated heads are 12-20 with the euro stuff being 15 typically. All that to say the profile cut with a knife changes with the hook angle. A profile ground for 12 degrees will be skewed when run at 25 degrees. Not a big deal but something to Be aware of, especially with corrugated w&h knife stock.

As for the tilting shaper everyone needs one, and buy as heavy of a machine as you can.

Good info, I appreciate it, confirmed I will get the machine next week now to buy a few sets of knives. Any recommendations on knife suppliers? I found a place, Template Services, they list a set of dutch lap knives in their catalog, going to give them a call.

Shopfox W1812 was delivered yesterday, boxes intact, no damage, always a relief. Now to assemble and make some chips, ordered a set of knives with a dutchlap profile. Should have them in a week and then I can some fun, or make a pile of fire wood.
