And so it begins. Turning the page to another chapter in the book of life.

I started this year with 2 New Years Resolutions:

1. I will not work more than 8 hours a day and I will take all my vacation.

2. There will be no F's given.

On #1 I have faired well on the 8 hour rule for the most part. Worked a few Saturdays and a few later evenings because I wanted to...not because I had to. The vacation front...well I have failed terribly. I took 2 Fridays off this past winter to go Snowmobiling. That is it so far and if I don't burn up the rest of my vacation it will effect my bonus at the end of the year. To hold myself accountable I wrote it in my 1 page plan and made it one of my performance metrics.

On #2...well push comes to shove that has never been an issue except when it came to work and getting it done. So I would say I am 95% on the no F's given.

So what the heck does all that mean? Well I "gotta do sumthin" (GDS) as my Engine Builder use to say in the heat of the battle. He is as tireless as I am. I need something to do most of the time. Always have and I believe I always will. Legos and Erectors Sets when I was a kid. Now the things I use to dream of building have become real. The quest must continue.

9 Years ago my Wife and I purchased a property we always dreamed of. She got the house she wanted and I got the Garages I wanted. But I wanted a shop too. I have always had a shop since I was 21 years old. Never less than 7000 sq feet and never more than 10000, both leased and owned and I owe a lot of thanks to my Dad for funding it at time I couldn't. It didn't come without a price. I had to keep his fleet of vehicles running which he never drove, just collected. His taste in vehicles was and still is 180 degrees from mine. Thank God my nephew is now managing the fleet.

3 years ago I built a shop behind the house so I wouldn't have to spend so much time away from home. I was MIA for the first 20+ years of our marriage. I was either at work, at the Shop or on the road racing. She is a saint for putting up with that. She stuck by my side and supported my Shop build and continues to support it.

Over the years I have collected equipment, mostly used and moved it into the "Skunkworks" and started working out of the backyard on my personal projects instead of staying at work and getting things made where there were constant interruptions. What the heck do they do when I am not there? I know the answer to that...they figure it out. And now they are doing a better job of figuring it out because the business is doing fine, growing and the employees for the most part are happy and very productive (a blessing).

I decided with the build of the GDS "Skunkworks" out with the used and in with the new.

The latest acquisition is an OMAX 5555 Water Jet. Had a Plasma Cutter and was not happy with the edge quality (a whole other thread). Not complaining, the Plasma did exactly what it should. I was just spoiled making things on a Laser since 1979.

Tomorrow the Tech will be here to get it fired up. One more day of vacation consumed and second day on Friday leaving me with 16 more to go. Next week if things workout I should have 1-3 days of training.

I'll keep popping in here and updating as the Machine gets smarter over time (I say this in jest) working on the many projects I keep myself busy with. My goal is to keep up with Mike and his :bowdown:ZMotorsports Project Thread....lol...

Took delivery August 3.

Set it in place after carefully laying it out on the Cad File of the Building.

Did a little plumbing last week. Need a hose near the front for rinsing.

Ran a leg to the Pump. Need to finish this up when they get the pump to location tomorrow.

Had to fabricate a Bracket back at the plant to mount the H2O line and Power. the set-up in the Brake is a makeshift flattening tool for pressing Pem Nuts into the Stainless Part.

Installed. Hate the new clamps compared to the old ones. They just look cheesy being painted instead of Copper Flashed. I ran out of my old stock.

Since I was on the lift I took a shot of the other business end of the Skunkworks.

Hope you follow along. I am always looking for pointers and new ways to do things.

Time to head up to the house. My Wife has Ice Cream waiting!!!

Some years ago the company that I worked for bought a used Omax , It came with a 500 gallon water tank and a RO unit to treat the water. This was to prolong run time between pump rebuilds. Is this still needed?

I've said it before, congrats on your success and your beautiful shop!

Cant wait to see what you whip up on the WJ.

I think I've asked in the past, Is that a VMC?

"if I don't burn up the rest of my vacation it will effect my bonus at the end of the year"

Don't you own the company?

Nice toys!

Thank you!!!

That is true and needed depending on the quality and hardness of your water. I am on a well and run a Filter which got me about 95% of the way there to passing their water test. I had to add a Water Softener to knock it down a few grains. Some city water supplies require the RO system. My buddy who recommended Omax to me had to install a Water Softener and an RO system. From what they have told me lowering the pressure 5-7% and running water less than 70 degrees will extend the pump life. The colder the water the better. Here I can get it down to 54 degrees.

I installed Filter about a year ago. The Water Softener last month.

Thank you. Should be cutting tomorrow.

I think I've asked in the past, Is that a VMC?

Yes. It is a Sharp SV-2414S-IF.

"if I don't burn up the rest of my vacation it will effect my bonus at the end of the year"

Don't you own the company?

I do (along with my Brother), but I play by the rules as everyone else. My rule so I am accountable to others...out of respect. We all write our own plans and live up to them or...

Now I've got tool envy.....A waterjet would make so much of my stuff easier.

CV fly on out!!! The Lake Elmo Airport is 5 minutes from my place. I'll pick you up. I know a few guys with Hangers there.

Last thing I made for an Aircraft has gotten me flight(s) on a T6 Texan, then I switch planes to a B25 for the trip back on Sept 8th. The T6 is a for sure, the B25 is dependent on an empty seat/spot.

Installer just left. Start filling it with water in the morning after the epoxy sets up.

Tonight I'll have redo the Water Hook-up. Their DXF file of the Machine layout is 13.5 inches off. Had to move the Machine Closer to the Pump 13.5 inches...before my electrician missed the X on the floor by 1 foot...now we are missing it by 2 feet. Oh well...another project for another day.

Wow. I got to play with a waterjet at school for just a little bit and loved what it could do, however, the mess it made wasn't nearly as cool. Everything within 8 feet of the machine was splattered nearly all the time. But I'm sure cutting wood on it for demos and classes wasn't helping.

That is quite the clean and organized skunkworks you have there. I don't know where you are in MN, but I would definitely enjoy a tour next time Im up there. (I make a run to Alexandria every once and awhile.)

I had a feeling you were going to say that. Makes sense and is the right thing to do.

I wish I could find a plumber that works as neat as yours. Or maybe you ran that copper line yourself. Needing to have my boiler installed for the infloor heat before winter and i am dreading the sloppy plumber syndrome....
This is a thread I will be following....can't wait!

The Plumber does happen to be me. I learned from one of the best guys I have seen run Copper. He taught me everything when we build our Fabrication Plant 19 years ago.

Finished up the Revision Change. Not as clean as I want but once I put the covers on the Pump no one will notice, Just hate having the valve under the cover.

My trusty steed the lift I barrowed from work 3 years ago...LOL..and about the only thing in my life I ever made from wood. My Plumbing Box.

I don't know pat, looks like work to me.....

I'd take a vacation :p

Lol, I had to laugh about the comment of the wife being a saint and putting up with your being gone for the first 20yrs. Mine has put up with her fair share as well. Why, I have no idea but now after over 30yrs together am starting to make my amends.

Good luck with your plan, it's very doable and I know you'll be successful at it. Now go take a vacation

Nah..."If you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life."

Not sure who said it, but when I heard it, it made sense.

I'd take a vacation :p

I might take a few days off next month and go P-Dog Hunting in SD.

Made amends a few years ago...and do every time I consider "us" over "me".

I'll get it done...need to stop setting my alarm on vacation days...LOL...but had to fill the Water Jet Tank.

Very nice shop
Boy would I like to hang out in there and learn a thing or two

Thank you. Come on "back" to MN as the Cali folks say. Learning comes from teaching. It is a 2 way street.

I mean no insult by this, but I think this pic belongs in the 'WTF Thread'. Is that in your home shop? That is a ****-ton of piping. Where does it all go?

Home Shop: Yes.

Where does it all go?

2 Geothermal Heat Pumps
1 Geothermal Air Conditioner & Forced Air Tempering Heat
Geothermal Underground Loop System
Hot Water & Boiler (Back-up Heat Source)
In-Floor Radiant (7 Zones)
Water Filter
Water Softener
Indoor Soft Water

So when you do got to "work" at the plant, do you ever push the maintenance guys aside and turn wrenches with them when SHTF ?

Thank you!!!

If you get out this way hit me up!!! I know if I ever get that deep in "Sconi" I'll be expecting to stop in.

I sold million dollars jobs one minute and was fixing a toilet the next....LOL...

I was the Maint Department up until about 18 months ago. Hired a guy. He had a bit of a learning curve...before we call anyone to come in we understand the problem, if we are capable we give it a try, if we are not we ask if anyone is and give it a try and only then do we pay a trip charge of the opportunity to learn from the guy we are paying.

He learned this the hard way. One of the Sales guy was having trouble with his key in the front door (must have lost his pass card). New Maint guy sends me an email asking if we have a Locksmith we prefer and explained the problem. I went out in the shop grabbed a can of WD-40 gave it a little squirt and rotated my key a couple of times. Sent him an email asking him to have the Sales guy try it. He came into my office and asked how it was fixed so fast.

I explained to him a nickels worth of WD-40 is $94.95 cents less than a trip charge for a Locksmith. We had a nice chat...now he tries, asks and then calls.

Install looks great Pat, and I have subscribed to the new Skunkworks Thread. Love the name, by the way :)

Thanks Ron!!!

Have a few more things to make now that I see what all the plumbing is needed. Menards here I come...out of stock on some Copper.

Ok I am in love with this thing.

We still have a few hours of hooking things up left on Monday...this is tough for me to swallow. When I punched a clock I really didn't punch a clock. I did what ever it took. Really you have to leave at 3:30...me I would have stayed all night so I could get on to something new Monday...guess I shouldn't be shocked. I am not knocking the guy...I just have a tad bit different customer service level...

It is not as fast as a Laser but it is spot on and leaves a nice edge!!!

So the Installer left after giving me about 30 minutes of instructions. Who am I not to jump in and start playing. Went in the office and out put a DXF file of a Caster Mounting Plate for a Material Cart I started on a week ago.

Cut it out of .120 CRS. Need to run up to the shop and grab a hunk of 1/4 HRP&O. Thought I had some here but I don't.

Need to sort out this Cutter Comp thing...it asks for it on the post processing and in the material file. Think it only needs one or the other. My part came out .030 small.

First things cut. Samples arrows to check the Nozzle Alignment and Garnet flow rates.

View media item 85987'

Sorted the Cutter Comp out on the Sample program...didn't have to post this one, just load it up and go. Changed the Comp from .015 to .010 and got it to +/-.000 from 1 inch all around. I am impressed.

Caster Plate...small by .030...QC determined it is UAI (Use as is)...there goes the ISO Certification...LOL...

The only downside to a water jet is cleaning the spent sand out of the tank. I found it a good task for employee's that wouldn't play nice. There are conveyor devices that automatically clean it as you operate it, not sure if that makes sense for a home shop.

Anyone want to take the overs on Pat's hours of sleep tonite? I'm at Zero and Under Hours - LOL. I know there is no way I'd be sleeping with a new tool like that in the shop!

Bummer they didn't finish completely for you- but this way you can play/learn all weekend and get more out of him on Monday! Have fun. Very happy for you!

Yep...but there is so much upside. I have never shied away from a Shovel. But I have a plan...Barton makes a Cleaner/Solids removal system that runs off of a standard Pressure Washer. Watched the Video...will be designing one and building it.

If that doesn't work I have a Nephew that is more than willing to do anything to hang out here and work the equipment. Best part is he went o school for it and is working at the Plant learning every department and will eventually move into Engineering.

When he filled out his application (he has my BIL's last name) he did not put me as a reference on the application. Once our VP of Operations read it he called me down to show it to me. He said "take a look at this resume, you must have a twin."

I don't know Ron...I found a piece of 1/4 Plate but after having Hernia Surgery 8 weeks ago I am not going to risk it lifting that sheet in the machine by myself(on the quest for a Forklift now).

Finished up the plumbing and here I sit at the GDS Skunkworks Design Center...LOL...I am yawning and my Wife has Ice Cream waiting...but it will be hard...

Need to put together a todo list...and things I need from the Plant tomorrow. The BIL and Nephew are rolling out. I have a Cart with 3600 lbs of steel on it I need to get here. My Skid Steer can only lift 2200 lbs safely. So the Nephew will be commissioned to unload the Cart until it is safe and then load the cart again. I feel bad but I cannot risk tearing this thing open.

Heading to the house...I maybe be back...LOL...

Have a good night!

Just an out of the way suggestion.

Go into your plumbing room an label all the pipes and valves.

I am sure you know haw that snakes nest works, but make a note book of the overall install and then follow up with labels on valves and pipes will make it much easier on the next guy.

Yep...they are labeled including the flow directions. Just need to read the fine print.

Zones, Hard vs Soft, inside vs outside...took me a bit to sort it all out myself.

In the Home Geo System I had the installers back 3 time to figure out why the Heat Pump was tripping out...after following all the lines myself I found they had reversed the load in and load out on the Heat Pump. So the in floor was calling for the Boiler Back-up while trying to heat all ready heated water. I still rib the installer to this day about that one.

Today we learned a few things...and didn't break anything...

Finished up the Caster Plate Project. Went into the office this morning to take car of a design a customer send in yesterday. Went down in the shop and grabbed a hunk of 1/4 HRP&O. Made the 4 Caster Mounting Plates I need to move the Material Cart along.

View media item 86019
The BIL showed up and the Nephew was MIA...went fishing with his Grandfather...great thing to do while Grandpa's can do that. I sure miss hanging out with my Gramps...both of them. So we did not move material.

The BIL did help me load 60 lb Salt Bags into the Softener. Then we played with cuts and offsets.

When he left I was sitting at my desk and saw these Wrench Sockets that I bought 10-15 years ago and never incorporated them into my Socket Storage System...well I can fix that.

View media item 86020
Fire up the Cad, designed the Holder and realized...no metal...no cut. So back to the Plant. Loaded up .060 True 8 Stainless (optical clarity grade), .125 5052-H32 Aluminum and some 1/4 304-2B Stainless Plate. Now I have a variety to play with.

After dinner, My Wife made Ribs that fell off the bone...I headed down and fire up the Jet. For not knowing the machine that well I am impressed with the tolerances it will hold. Running about +/-.003 in the x axis and +/-.001 in the y axis. I need to sort that one out. But I think it might be the Y axis moves only the Cutting Head and the X Axis moves both the Cutting Head and the Y Axis. Not going to loose sleep over it. I would just like to know.

I am happy with the results. Need to figure out how to reduce the "frosting effect". I was shocked how clean the True 8 Stainless cut.

Left to right: Mid-plate, Top Plate, Bottom Plate and spacers.

The finished assembly...I may start living in my shop.

Tomorrow we will be welding the Material Cart if it rains. If it doesn't rain I may have to go Shooting...our personal range needs a little TLC...and I need a little Trigger Therapy.

My neighbor is a Metal Artist. He came over one day and saw a few things and started making them for me. I give him scrap metal, broken parts/equipment and he builds these things...

That is a copy of a Triple Barrel Shotgun I have...

His latest creation he made for me 1st pic, some other he did for me second pic. And the last pic is the Triple of mine he copied.

Look into an Ebbco garnet removal system. My buddy runs one on his Flow that runs 50 hours a week. By far the best garnet removal system he's found. No more tank shoveling.

Man, that is a nice addition to an already awesome shop. I'd suggest getting the mini-split installed an build a small sleeping area. I think you might need it :)

Having a CNC mill, a laser engraver and numerous other items myself, I'm jealous of the water jet. I may have missed it, but how thick can that cut in mild steel?

Thank you!!!

The Mini-split is for an other area of the building. The Car Shop, Machine Shop and Office are Air Conditioned. I have a nice comfy couch in the Office should the need arise.

Max thickness is 8 inches. Limited by the height from the top of the Table to the Max in the Z Axis.

For me, most things will be under 1 inch....more like 1/4 inch and less.

Today I decided to forgo the shooting and making things to tidy up the Plumbing and finish the Air Lines.

Cut off about 15 extra feet of Hose. 1 is for the Cooling System on the Pump. The other is to purge the Tank if the supply line gets above 70 degrees. Made a manifold to dump the water in the tank where I can see it to make sure everything ids flowing properly.

Added a main Air Drop with a drip leg and while I was at it added a couple of quick disconnects. Disconnects are like out lets...you can never have to many.

Removed the Factory supplied 20 foot Air Line and replaced it with a 3 foot Goodyear Hose I found preassembled at Northern Tool. And 2 more disconnects....one is under the Machine.

From the front, ran the Air Line parallel to the Water Supply Line.

From the back, not as clean as I wanted it but when you follow the Manufacturers recommended locations things can get busy...wish their Cad Model of the Machine Layout was accurate. Would have turned out a little cleaner.

While Plumbing I re-organized my Fittings drawers.

20 years ago I demoed a building and found boxes of new Fittings. Took about 700 feet of 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch Copper Tubing. Random Lengths, 10 footers and some 20 footers. I am down to just the 1/2 lengths left. Saved me a millions trips to Menards.

Tomorrow the Next Day Air Parts should arrive and they can finish the install.

Thursday a full day of training. Can't wait.

You do everything the right way, glad to see this coming together so nicely!

My ol'Man always said "If you wipe one side of your *** you smell like ****, wipe both sides, do it once and do it right."

One of these days I hope he come out to see this...I think it scares him to see the things I do...LOL...

Pat that is just a stellar finish on those cuts. This is certainly the wrong terminology but how much lead it does this require before going into the finished edge or does it?

Also those works of art your buddy does are insanely cool. Do you have anymore of them to show?

Cam you are close on the terminology...Lead-in...not sure exactly but it appears from the Slugs I did find about 1/8 inch with no lead-out. Pretty much perpendicular to the edge being cut. I am sure there are things you can do to change those in the Cutting Conditions...I haven't gotten that far yet...found the "Quality of Cut" area of the Programming Software.

Here is a link to a Facebook Page he has created. He had a Show in Minneapolis a few weeks ago. I couldn't make it. But this dude has mad skills.

Took last night off to do a little volunteer work. Back at it tonight..

Needed place to put all my extensions...and decided to redo my whole Socket Storage System. Will be work in progress over the next few days.

But I did get the Extension hold done to night.

Water Jetted the Parts. Took the one item over to the Brake and put the Bends in. Then I ad to put the Tabs in the slots for Fuse Welding.

Need to work on the Tab And Slot offsets. They we a little on the tight side. I typically use +.002 on the width and +.005 on the length for clearance on the Lasers. Might be a bit snug until I get my mind around the Offsets and "Edge Quality".
