Very nice, hope it works out for you. Out of the brands I look for P&C seems to be the hardest to find. Been looking for a tool box for awhile and not even had a sniff and I only live about five miles from where the factory was.

Living near Portland, I have found it easy to find P&C tools. They are easier to find Plomb. Most people have never even heard of P&C tools, so they pass them by. I had a guy at work a few years ago give me a 16 inch P&C adjustable wrench because he had never heard of that brand of tools before. If it does not come off of a tool truck, he does not want it. I have not found a P&C tool box, but I did find a Plomb tool box several weeks ago at a garage sale.

I started work at P &C October 1962 till June 1990. the P & C line was phased out in the late 70s to Proto when the Proto plant in Los Angeles was shut down
then in 1990 Proto was moved to Texas
I live about 1 mile from where the plant WAS it now is a Parking Lot

All vary nice stuff! I think my only P&C stuff is the 3/4" drive ratchet, 6" extension and 15/16 Socket that are part of the few tools I have of my dad's.

I have noticed that too. Wifes family is all in Oregon and I have seen more vintage P&C hand tools being used by extended family who lives there over the years. In fact I recall coming across lots of P&C hand tools when I lived there on the coast about 25 years ago. Saw more P&C in that part of the US than in any other part of this country. Personally I always found them to be nice wrenches, every bit a good as Proto from the same era.

Excellent info. Is it true that current Proto wrenches, since the move to Texas, are now made in the old National Hand Tool factory (now run/owned by Stanley)?

That 4-way is awsome, I always wondered who that Portland craig's ad was. We are kind of neighbors.

Nice stuff ! I really like that box. I don't see a lot of P & C around these part, but my Dad has several P & C tools from his Alaska days.

You got any old pics of the factory? I work with someone who toured the factory in the very early 60's as a highschooler, and he said all he really remembered was that it was dark and dirty. Info about the brand is very scarce, you could do MUCH to enlighten us; I would love to hear more!

I've heard many times it was in Milwaukee, but I have no idea exactly where. Would love to know where.

what does P and C stand for. is it short for proto/challenger? or something else
thanks

P&C Hand Forged Tools was founded in 1920 as a blacksmith shop in Boise, Idaho. The founders were John N. Peterson and Charles F. Carlborg, both Swedish immigrants and both highly skilled as blacksmiths and machinists. Within a few years P&C had moved to Oregon, first to Lebanon, Oregon and then to Milwaukee (a suburb of Portland). By 1923 the P&C Hand Forged Tool Company was listed in the Polk's Portland City Directory, a business directory covering the Portland area.

Gang,

I found a P&C 3/4 drive tool box at a swap meet this fall. It's the 1st P&C box of any kind I've seen in the wild down here in Tejas.

Here's a few pic's:

PCToolBox2.jpg

PCToolBox3.jpg

PCToolBox1.jpg

It's rough but intact and will eventually house my mix & match 3/4 drive tools.

I have a 3/8 drive set I've been piecing together. It almost complete, just missing a P&C ratchet and 1/2" 12pt socket. I'll post some photos of this set in the morning.

Great thread.

Google maps providence milwaukie, look for the empty lot south west of the actual hospital. That's where I was lead to believe p&c was located.

I saw Proto, Challenger, Penens, Vlchek, Fleet, Names stamped on the same tools they were all the same just the finish could be diff.

Not sure about Vlchek but the rest were all part of the Plomb/ Proto umbrella of tool co.

Old but great thread. Currently live very close to the old P&C grounds here in Milwaukie. Commonly have found their products in Portland antique shops, heck we even found an almost complete box wrench set here in the attick. Great stuff

I run across Vlchek wrenches at swap meets all the time that are dead ringers for Proto. It wouldn't surprise me if they were made by Proto at some point.

Lurker no more!!!

Name is Greg and I'm from Idaho. This is definitely my kind of place. Old cars are my main thing but I can't seem to stay away from the occasional late night bidding frenzy for old tools on Ebay, or the lure of rare finds at the local yard sales.

Love P&C stuff! The similarities between my 16" P&C and my 20" Proto are what lead to my interest in old tools.

The fact that P&C started in Boise, Idaho only lead to my fascination.

This is the most informative thread that I have found on P&C, so it's time to come out of the closet.

It's great that someone that actually worked at the factory is a member here.

The 16" adjustable was purchased from a retired neighbor in 1993. The 3/4 drive tool box along with the sockets, wrenches and needle nose pliers were purchased from a lady that had a '74 Audi Fox for sale on Craigslist in 2010.

The smaller adjustables are Ebay purchases but the 12" adjustable I traded with a coworker for a Spanish made 12" Channellock, and the 8" came with a cool lot of wrenches from an east coast antique store.

The big chisel was purchased at my only trip to the local pawn shop this century.

It is Milwaukie IE Not ee Oregon. The Plant stood on the N.E. Corner of 32nd ave. & SE Lewellyn st. in Milwaukie, Oregon. I grew up in Lebanon, Oregon and my Grand parents stated work at P & C during ww2. My Grand mother was the First Female to work in the plant. yes in the early 60s the plant was dirty and dark still had HARD packed dirt floors in part of it. The stock room part was all nice and New it is where they had all the finished product and fill orders for the customers. I do not have very many pictures of the place

P&C also was either owned by or did contract work for Plomb in the war years. They produced some of the larger WF series DBE wrenches, some early WF ratchets and MANY WF sockets (under both the P&C logo and the PLOMB logo) including most of the large 3/4" drive WF stuff.

(Hint, hint to you guys in the area! I looking for this stuff...... ;))

From the few examples I have, they were top quality tools even during the war years.

See pic along with ! of the tool stamps I have along with my Maint. coverall tags.Allso the pics of the 3 foot long 3/8 speed handle & 3/4 drive ratchet from WW2

Vlchek in it's later years was owned by Plomb. I recently bought a Plomb 3/4 inch drive ratchet with a removable drive plug. The drive plug was made by P&C. I buy some P&C tools almost every weekend from several places. The only time i don't buy them is if there is something i want more. I don't really collect them for myself, i am just building a collection to resell in the future.

Keith,

When did P&C close down? Who owned P&C when they were closed down?

Speaking of P&C Stuff. I found this little guy at the flea market yesterday. I/4" drive, and 5 inches long, and works great. I did try and google it, and looked at A.A., but found nothing on this #0246. Does anyone know the time frame of it's production, and or any other info. on it?

Thanks

Looks to be a Plvmb ratchet - try the Proto history page on AA...

Nice find, btw!
