While searching for some good bang-for-the-buck tools, I've discovered that many of the tool truck brands can be purchased for about 1/2 price by going through their industrial brand.

I'd like to use this thread to identify some of the most common brands and tools for easy reference.

Here's my contribution so far.

Please add to the list. When we get a big enough response, I'll put together a master thread. Be sure to include an exact model number from the alternative brand.

The tool should be identical to the truck version, or at least 95% similar.

When it is all said and done, there is only a handful of good tool companies and the same products cross different brand is pretty common. Look at Matco and Armstrong owned by Danaher, who also makes gearwrench, allen, napa, masterforce and craftsman wrenches. Stanley owns Mac and Proto, though the cross over is somewhat limited. SO owns Willams and even though Willams has been around longer the SO, their newer offers are mostly older SO designs, ratchets and screwdrivers being the main ones. Its good to dig, you may find some great deals we don't know about.

I cant provide part numbers, but another guy at work picked up a set of Craftsman files. They appear to be identical to my Mac files. Both are a great set of files. I've had my Mac ones for over a year and use them daily. They cut just as good as his new ones.

Great thread idea.

I've been told that the Craftsman thread roller kits are identical to the SnapOn ones.

Yep, as far as i can tell all the re-thread kits are identical (matco, mac, snap on, craftsman) The plastic radiator hose pinch pliers from matco and craftsman are the same. 12 piece snap ring pliers are the same from mac to craftsman (huge price difference).

TRCOMBO-48 - Mac Rethread Kit
SPM6225206402- Kastar Rethread Kit

PK1250- Mac Snap Ring Pliers
00950464000- Craftsman Snap Ring Pliers

Im 99% sure that Irwin makes the taps and dies in Mac, Matco, and Snap On kits. So save a bunch by getting it right through Irwin.

There are a whole bunch of items that the trucks rebrand. Most all of it is good quality stuff, so theres nothing wrong with scoring it at a lower cost!

Irwin/Hanson also makes the bolt/screw extractors that Snap On and Craftsman sell... Craftsman calls them consumable and won't warranty but SO will send new ones right out so on something like that, it may be worth paying double if you break them a lot.

OTC makes Matco's posi-lock pullers.

OTC makes Matco's posi-lock pullers.
I don't think so.

My understanding is that Posi-Lock makes the pullers for OTC and Matco...and others.

http://www.posilock.com/History/history.htm

OTC is on my shitlist. Bought a bunch of stuff about two years ago, with genuine OTC branding--not the imported-junk "Stinger" label. Every piece was Communist Chinese except for one made in Taiwan.

I don't think OTC "makes" anything any more. It seems like the whole product line is bought-in, more often than not from the most reprehensible country on Earth.

(The Posilock pullers being a wonderful exception to the Made-in-China majority.)

Mac rebranded a few Titan ratchets. I'm not sure if they have the full line, but the 24" 1/2" Drive Flex Head is just a Titan with a Mac handle. Nice handle, but not worth the huge price difference for an import tool. Kinda wish I'd known that before I bought it. It was also one of my first Mac purchases, and I didn't even think to check where it was made.

As the thread grows the first post should be updated with the part numbers

I'll try to keep up on this. Really wish these forums had the community wiki type 2nd post.

Hope you all are enjoying my contribution as an early poster to the forums.

There is the bahco adjustable pipe wrench sold as a blue point tool. I found it. there are various sizes. mark up is significant.

MAC Tools DBC18B 18-Piece Disc Brake Caliper Set seems to be identical to the Harbor Freight 97143 Pittsburgh Professional 18 Piece Disc Brake Pad and Caliper Service Tool Kit, with the only differences being the arrangement and color of the blow mold cases.

Anyone going into the automotive tech field or any service repair field these days can easily outfit himself with basic tools from other sources and still have excellent quality tools that will serve many years. Use the trucks for specialty tools or specific tool nobody else offers, but for everything else just go with OEM.

In another life as both a A/P mechanic and small engine mechanic I simply outfitted myself with tools from auto parts stores, industrial supply warehouses, and local hardware stores. Even Sears was useful in those days. I still own and use most of those tools today on my own vehicles.

Ok the bahco pipe wrenches I put p early are snapon\blue point tools pwz0 g, pwz 1 g or pwz 2 g. I've seen them both marked snapon and blue point.

As well, kastar and otc make various brake tools for drum brakes on diesel semi trucks and here are a few, many rebranded by matco, snapon, etc.

I have a 5 or 6(?) piece Craftsman set that I got on clearance for $32 (was about $90). ABSOLUTELY 100% IDENTICAL to SnapOn's $200 version (also Mac/Matco/Cornwall etc). They are all made by Strand.

Snap-on makes their own snap ring pliers. They are not identical to the craftsman. Similar, yes. But not the same steel with a different pair of grips/stamp on them.

Anyone know if the Williams line of screwdrivers is the same as Snap-On?

I JUST bought these, the handles are identical and side by side the tips are the same also. The appearance is too. I thought I read somewhere that snap on took on the williams handles for there own use.

I work for 2 different shops. One, I have a regular Snap on dealer, prices are regular. The other shop is for the city, we have a Snap on Industrial account, most tools are the same, but different prices (cheaper) and they also carry Bahco and Williams, and some other brands as well. Just one example: the SSDMR4B ratcheting screwdriver is 61.95 plus taxes in the truck, with Snap on industrial it cost me, $35 no taxes( he he) and some other hand tools cost less money with Snap on Industrial.

Snap-on has re-branded Stride retaining ring pliers as Snap-on in the past that were exactly the same as Craftsman (and others). More recently though, they were selling them branded Blue Point.

Matco's smoke machine is a rebranded Redline. Most of Cornwell's impacts including air ratchets are rebranded by IR too.Matco's screwdriver bits for the little powered driver's are rebranded Irwins,I compared my Matco set,the Irwin set my father has and they look the same although the cases are a differant color.OTC is going down hill,Bosch bought them out including Kent Moore,Robinair including the other companies previously owned by SPX.When Bosch buys companies out, they cut out support right away.

here's an interesting one. Best i could find was this one, but It was either matco or snap on that has a hard handle one just like this, instead of the soft handle.

I've seen a lot of those products on the MAC truck.
