I'm finally ready to post the build of my new shop. It's already mostly done on the outside. I have documented it with pictures and will share them with you, It will be a 30' x 40' pole style building with 12' side walls and a 4/12 pitch roof with a one foot overhang all the way around, It will have one 10' x 10' overhead door and one 36" service door with no windows. The main goal is to save money and do the work myself with a lot of help from my son Cody. I'm a big Chicago Bears football fan “DaBears” so hence the name of my build “DaBarn”. I have a neighbor who is a contractor haul in 2 tri axle loads of dirt and level it out and compact it, Payment was a trade for the 8 x 10 shed that sat where the barn is going, I'm very happy with that deal and he hauled the shed off. So now I'm ready to lay out the barn and get started.

Another shot from a different angle, getting close to ordering the trusses, got all my lumber from Pro Build out of Fort Wayne Indiana and had great luck with them and free delivery. All the lumber was good, I didn't have to send any back...

Getting worried about bad weather coming in so I put the trusses on hold and decided to pour the floor. I got a nephew that is a professional concrete man (Its good to know people). So we went at it, I never had to much experience at it so LC is the boss on this one, we laid down the plastic and the concrete reinforcing mesh and poured 4" of concrete, Cody and I just pushed concrete around and we watched LC do his magic. Its awesome to watch a true craftsman going at their trade, I rented a power trowel and LC made it look like we knew what we were doing, I was nervous when we started but I couldn't be happier with the outcome. I paid LC well for his time. Now that the concrete is done I can relax a bit The next few photo's are of the concrete work

LC brought over his concrete saw and cut the slab and it turned out perfect, I'm glad I didn't have to do it, The cuts would of came out crooked guaranteed :bounce:

You are very lucky. I'd love to have one of those here in California, but building code doesn't allow it.

Congratulations on getting a new shop/barn!

Thanks MrJason, Pole barns are real popular in my area and a little cheaper than a traditional stick built structures...

Took delivered of the trusses  I recruited four of my good buddies to come over to drink some beer and have a good old fashion truss raising party. We put them up by hand, we inverted them then stuck one end up followed by the other end then we flipped them upright into place, then toe nailed them down and just randomly threw up a bunch of temporary 2x4 bracing...It was a productive day, started around 8:00 am and was finished by 1:00 pm. That was even with a awesome chili and corn bread lunch break prepared by my lovely wife, and with several beer breaks, I got some friends that can really put away the beer

Well it was late fall of 2010 when I started work on the barn! However today 1-11-2016 is really cold, lows in the single digits and 2 to 4 inches of snow expected tonight with a nasty wind chill... I will try to get everyone up to date on the barn, but it will take sometime. I didn't think I was worthy of posting my build...so I got a late start, Thanks for checking in tho

Still very nice work for a Bears fan!
From a cheese head!

Had some nasty weather roll in while doing the roof, even had to deal with a ice storm while crawling around up there (very slick), but I got the whole thing done by myself. I put on the first row of purlins then I made two spacers out of 2x4's for the rest of the rows, once I got a rhythm going things went fairly quick. I even had Christmas music playing on the radio at the time

I took the time to add 2x8 permanent supports on all four corners of the walls for added rigidity, it seems like I get a lot of wind in my area so I didn't think it would hurt anything even though the posts are cemented in 4' deep.

Got the one foot overhang finished all the way around and added a row of 2x10's down the center of the bottom part of the trusses for added rigidity and give me something to walk on if I need to crawl around in the attic in the future.

"The Money Shot" Got all the framing done!!! Even got the steel in, if you look close its on the inside of the barn floor covered with snow and ice :eyecrazy: I had a local Amish man from Topeka Indiana cut all my steel, he done a great job for me

I don’t have any close up pictures of them on the barn but I added these Simpson strong-tie hurricane tie downs. They provide resistance to uplift and lateral forces, it is designed to help counter the effect of high wind and seismic events on a structure. I read where they add roughly 2000 psi. of tie down force or resistance? I only needed 18 of them and they were less than one dollar each so I figured what the hell, it’s not code in my area. I nailed them on the inside of the barn wall and trusses…

Looks great, I would hate to be out there in that weather doing what you guys do.

Nighttrain

Thanks for checking in. I have lived in northeast Indiana all my life, we do get some nasty weather here in the winter, a lot of it comes from the lake effect blowing in off of Lake Michigan. In fact when I got done with the framing of my barn in late December I waited till March to start putting on the steel.

The framing was finished in late December and I waited till March to start the steel work, It was a cold three months and we had a lot of snow, but come march the weather broke and it allowed me to start the steel work on the barn...

Had to recruit Cody to help me put up the steel on the roof, the panels are 17' long. Also put up the fascia trim on the sides and got the overhead door trimmed out too...

I like the brown wainscoting quite a bit. I ended up going with an evergreen/stone 2 tone building. I may have liked the brown/stone better. Oh well... too late now :)

Making good progress now, it really doesn't take to long to put up all the steel, The sides were already cut to the proper size, I did run into a little issue with cutting the angles at the top on the front and back of the barn, good thing there is a j-channel at the top to cover that up :bounce:
