We are ready to kick off the Index!

We are starting an index of the many threads in the GJ Gallery and you are invited to submit your build thread for all to see. You will be able to enter attributes about your place (such as the size and type of construction) that others can sort/filter on. The intention is to make it easier for members trying to find ideas from other shops similar to their own or the one they are about to build. It may also help members find that build they read about in the past, but can’t quite remember the name of the thread.

Forum member luvit was kind enough to devote his time to setting up the index data list and creating an entry form making it easy for anyone to submit their build thread. The next posts will give details on how to view the list or submit a new entry to it. (I'm actually curious to see what the final version looks like!)

Please feel free to reply to this thread if you have any feedback or can offer any suggestions to improve the index in the future.

**********************************************************
EDIT:

This is a community-generated index and we need the forum members of Garage Journal to help build it!

Please fill out the form down in post #3 to enter data on your garage.

Alright, Here is the form which allows you to enter your data into the index.
You may also enter-in threads for Members who are Missing in Action.
This is a community effort, and would be so nice to see each of us submit one or two threads that belong to other Members who are MIA. ** Give it a whirl **

I'm just reiterating that this is a *community effort*
You may submit other threads for GJ Members that are MIA.

Yet, the real owner of the garage can still resubmit data to improve accuracy.
What if we all submitted 2 threads that were not our own?

Cryptic1911, Red Leader, softailgarage, aqr81 - Thanks a lot. It's great to have it out there and I'm glad you like it.

It's kind of funny, but luvit has been a bit quiet and secret about the final details going into all this, and that made me a somewhat nervous because I'm a planner and don't really like surprises popping up when it comes to projects (they are usually a bad thing in my line of work ). So there we were, the night before going live and I STILL don't know what the heck it's going to look like. All I get from luvit is "I want you to be surprised too". Well, I must say, I was very surprised, that's for sure, and in a good way. Embedding the index and the entry form right in the thread really is a plus. And the extra charts and map are icing on the cake (and actually quite interesting too, IMHO).

The very best thing about all this is it's going to be a group effort and not a one man show (namely me), so I can just sit back now and watch the Index grow as members enter their own data. Thanks so much luvit for saving me a ton of work and actually making this so much better than I ever envisioned.

Now people, don't be shy about entering those threads into the index!

Wow awesome When I submitted my info the other day, I had no idea it was going to come out this great. . . . . hats off to the two of you for spending your time to create this index. Another thanks goes out to Ryan for allowing this to happen too.

Yah, the sticky was great to see - Thanks Jack/Ryan! I was hoping it would happen sooner or later, but sooner works for me so I don't have to bump it occasionally for all current members to see. I guess the pressure is on now to get the list populated with many more build threads

I plan to enter some Missing-In-Action member's threads next week. I'm guessing there are many judging by the total vs. active member ratio. I will also update the opening post to stress this point.

Thanks to all that have participated!

Great idea. I filled out the form, but it errored when I submitted it.
And I did wait forever, until it came back with the error page.

Sorry to hear that Steevo, but thanks for letting us know. One of the three I entered so far hung after submission. I'm not sure if it would've eventually given an error if I waited long enough, but I killed the window after about 10 mins and tried again soon after with success. The other two took maybe 20-30 seconds to respond that the data was successfully recorded.

I suggest you try one more time or just send luvit or I the data and we can try it.

(EDIT: I see luvit added a confirmation check box at the bottom of the form about pausing 60 seconds after submitting)

Any idea why the index will not let any of the sort features work on my desktop but in fact work just fine on Lin's laptop. She is on the same wireless network hookup and using the same security program.

Steevo, I just succeeded with a test.
I don't know what time you attempted, but yesterday this was sluggish.
There is a 2min timeout, so I have reduced all the code bloat to make this a 1min confirmation. Please try again, you'll see I just succeeded with a 'Test5' entry.

NASMAN, I tested this on Windows XP with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome browsers. Can you list the OS and browser of your desktop and Lin's laptop?

BTW everyone, there were 8 new submissions today!!

Hi Luvit
Thanks for asking and about follow up on this.
Lin and I both run Windows XP-SP2 with Internet Explorer.
I also have Firefox on mine and I tried it using Firefox and that was worst. It would show the layout but none of the data.
When I go to any of the views to sort in Explorer it will highlite and bring up that to the top of the list. Example- In sq ft, click on the drop down, click on 3000 and the 3000 will display at the top of the column. At that point, in the bottom task and on the left it shows Error On Page. It will than just sit there and do nothing. I can reclick that column and try to sort on another column, but same results. No sort and error on page.
Now this is interesting, I just tried it again on Firefox before I shut it down and when I click on enable sort it comes up with all the info and works as you have designed it.
But still nothing on Explorer.

Ah yeah, I have experienced no data (dashes in the fields).
So I added a button at the top named something like "load data/reset"
Do you think you pressed it?
If not, I'll find a way to make this button standout better.

And thanks for pointing this out. I'm trying to provide a product that doesn't require a page full of instructions.

Yes, I did and have used the "load data/reset". That will take care of the problem when I am in Firefox. It also will take care of the missing data when in Explorer. However it does not take care of the error on page in Explorer, nor does it allow me to sort on this machine.
I am running Explorer 8. I spent an hour or better going thru all of the security settings and still won't work. Changed the settings one at a time to see which would make a difference. Still nothing. I added the url as a trusted site, nothing. I allowed cookies on everything, nothing. I removed pop up blocking, nothing. And several more that I don't remember the names of or understand, nothing makes a difference.
If I am the only one of the members that are having this problem than it is not worth taking up space on here to address it. I only posted the problem in case others are also not able to use the info the way it is intended.
Thanks for the concern, and if you have any ideas as to how I could make it work, I will be glad to try it. Whether you post it here or PM me.

Ditto for me too, I was going to try and submit again tonight, so we'll see...
Amazzen - looks like it worked for you. Thanks for submitting.

Steevo - I don't see your entry yet. Are you still having trouble?

Steevo succeeded.
Kudos to RedLeader for volunteering a moment to submit 2 more threads that were not his!
He's completed the most submissions for these 2 additional threads.

Missing In Action (MIA) member build threads:
If entering a thread for an MIA member, please check to see if they are truly MIA by clicking on their name in a reply and selecting “Find More Posts By Member”. It will show their latest post at the top. It also might be a good idea to reply in their thread to let them know it was done. Since most members have a subscription to their own build thread, they will receive an email that there was some activity on their thread and may pop in to make edits to the index entry.

I plan to reply in their thread with the following as a courtesy:

“An index has been created for the Garage Gallery build threads and I submitted yours on behalf of the Garage Journal community. We are trying to capture as many inactive threads as possible so I hope you don't mind. It will serve as a placeholder until you log in and check it for accuracy. Should you find errors, you can easily submit your own entry and mine will be deleted.

Drop in and give us an update if you have a moment.”

(Feel free to copy/paste into any MIA threads you submit)

Either luvit fixed it, or I'm not seeing the problem. Everything seems to be okay.

Thanks for your submittals, btw. This reminds me that I need to get a few more added this week.

nkachur was right.. the dashboard view was a off-set by one column.
a few weeks ago i deleted some administrative logic to speed this thing up and i think i off-set the formula pointers.
Thanks for the heads-up, nkachur!

Still a couple issues with the dashboard view. Everything lines up now but the owners name is missing and I only have 60 listings showing. Otherwise everything is looking great
