Since I’ve spent a fair amount of time doing Light Fixture Layouts for GJ members, I figured I'd put them all in one thread as a general reference guide. I’ll start with the latest and add more as time permits.

All Isoplots in footcandles and done at 30" workplane height (30" from the floor).

To all of the posters I haven't been able to get to, please see post #931 in The Best Light Fixture Ever thread.

DSPark13 Fixture Layout Request 36’ x 27.5’ x 12’

Condensed:
3 car garage 36’ x 27.5’ x 12’
Class B Residential Ballast that doesn't interfere with the stereo or TV.
8' high 18" wide storage shelf
Two post lift in the single bay and hopefully a four post lift in the middle for work and or car storage.
The garage will be used mostly for working on cars as well as parking. On the 27.5' single bay side I will install a 2 post lift at 13' from the two window wall. The outside edge of the post baseplate will be 3' from the solid wall, an air compressor in the corner near the sub panel and the single garage door, a welder stored in the corner of the solid wall and window wall, tool chest and work benches all along the solid wall leaving room around the lift post.
The 4 post lift will be 9' 3" in width and 18' 8" total length with ramps, located in middle bay with the front of the lift 5' off the staircase wall. The 2 left side posts of the 4 post lift will be placed into the 2 foot space between the single and double garage doors.

rown4au Fixture Layout Request 23'x 36' x 14' + 6'6" x 18' x 10'

Condensed:
The main garage space is 23' x 36' x 14' and the workshop is 6'6" x 18' x 10'.

Although it doesn't show it on these drawings I will have a row of cabinets and a workbench top in the workshop area next to the slop sink and fridge. There will also be a 4 post lift in the 3rd bay that shows the car.

I have already told the architects that I would prefer the jack shaft openers on the wall next to the door so they will not be located on the ceiling as the drawing shows. The tracks for all garage doors will go up to the full ceiling height to give max clearance so that would mean you have minimal overlap on the ceiling of the actual door to cause shadows.

That said my initial thoughts after reading some of the comments on this thread are to have 2 x fixtures located on either side of each vehicle like they show but I would add two more in between the workshop and the 3rd bay and 2 between the 1st bay and the house wall. I was also thinking that I should add one fixture per bay along the front wall centered in each bay. This would give plenty of light over the work bench area and around the front of the car and hopefully avoid shadows as discussed. However this would make a total of 13 fixtures for the space, so

I am not sure if that is overkill.

I am also thinking about adding a ceiling fan on either side of the center bay for air circulation but that is a different discussion.

dmcintosh Fixture Layout Request 24' x 30' x 10'

Condensed:
24' x 30' pole building with a 10' ceiling to replace a 12' x 18' shed. Planning to use this to work on/restore my 1966 Chevelle Wagon. The concrete will be 'painted' with Rust Bullet in the next day or so I can start my electric. Planning to install a 60 amp subpanel.

Been working on lighting ideas and would like some input. From what I've already learned, I am planning to use fluorescent strip lights (T8) probably Lithonia from HD since they are easy to get and the price is not bad. Any ideas on the layout? In addition to the main lighting I may also add lights directly over the work benches and equipment if it is too dark.

dmcintosh Suggested Fixture Layout 24' x 30' x 10'

Here's the most even illumination I can get to, providing workbench lighting and maintaining a less prominently lit mower/storage area:

Workplane Isoline Fc Plot:

All fixtures mounted directly to ceiling. IES info used = Metalux SSF-232
I assumed your 24x30 dims were exterior, so plot is based on 23x29 interior dim.

Very cool- thanks! I have a 27 X31 X 12 (interior) space, so I should be able to work from one of those pretty well. I see I need to save up some more money, though. Anyone know what a kidney sells for these days?

gtae07 Suggested Fixture Layout 28' x 24' x 8'

Alternate Lighting Layout suggestion:
GJ-gtae07-1a.jpg

Fixture Recommendation:
31nSnyGYFjL.jpg
Lithonia SB232 $32.97 on Amazon.

Wraps (lensed fixtures) are recommended for 8ft ceiling height.
At that price the ballast is probably a budget model that will die within a few years, but by then you'll have a choice of upgrading to a higher quality fluorescent ballast or installing ballast bypass LED retrofits.

Light fixtures on low ceilings make longer shadows, thus placement becomes more critical.
Lumen output can be controlled via lamp selection:
The Sylvania OCTRON 800 XP XL ECOLOGIC3 Lamp spec sheet is a good example of the different lumen outputs available.

Perfect timing... I'm in the process of laying out a (hopefully soon) build that is pretty much a 180 degree version of what you have posted for dmcintosh. Where that layout has the mower/storage, I will have an enclosed stairway leading down into the basement where I currently have bilco doors. Where you have 4 sets paralleling the car, I was thinking of using 3 sets of 4 tube fixtures evenly spaced. Now I'm rethinking that...

Any chance I could get some help with a layout? I'm working on and restoring cars and would love some good light. I have 15 feet to the top of the ceilings. It will be finished drywall with the common white ceilings and walls down to about a 4 foot grey section at the bottom of the walls.

The 4 post lift in the front is mainly for storage and any work I do over there will be under the car. I'd say around the 2 post lift and the area in front of the workshop is where I'd mostly be working.

Sure, please provide exterior workshop wall dimensions, garage door width and type. Lift location dimensions would be useful too.

I'd love some help as well. Lighting is an art and I am not qualified. LOL

My garage will be a 26X40 galavnized tubing structure with colored exterior skin. Walls will be 10' with an approx. 14' peak on the gable ends. Inside will remain all exposed. The truss's will be 2"X3" Galvanized tubing set on 5' centers. Unconfirmed but the inside of the exterior and roof tin panels should be an off white or at minimum light in color. Garage doors will be 10' wide and 8' tall Roll up style doors. Entry door will be a standard 3-0 door. There will be a 4 post lift most likely place in the center of the building so to have access all around any vehicle placed on it. There will be no drop ceilings and the fixtures will be suspended by jack chain at an elevation to be determined. Fixtures are 48" LED's rated at 4200 Lumens. LED color is 5,000k. 86 CRI. Fixture dimensions are 47.25" x 5.98" x 2.74". I have attached some pictures for reference. Is there anything else I can provide to assist you?

THANKS A TON IN ADVANCE!

Cooper Metalux 8TSSF-254-UNV-EBT1 Qty. 18
Cooper Metalux SSF-254-UNV-EBT1 Qty. 18

Spec Sheet: http://www.cooperindustries.com/con...ts/metalux/spec_sheets/081872_SSF114_SSSx.pdf

Many manufacturers make similar style strip lights. I do not recommend any fixtures with lamps right next to each other. Assume that you'll probably have to special order these fixtures from a local distributor. I do not recommend the Metalux SNF series or the Lithonia Z series due to poor lamp spacing = reduced efficiency.

F54T5HO Lamp Qty: 108
Suggested lamp: Sylvania 20906 or 20949
$4.68 ea.(the 25,000 hr. Life on that site is wrong. Linked spec sheet 40-45,000 hrs.)

Ceiling height works with either F32T8 or F54T5. Went with F54T5 to reduce fixture quantity, thus reducing total lighting purchase and installation costs.

I don't have any boats to insert as objects in the building, so I modified 2 pickup trucks
(wider and longer than normal trucks)

SSF-254-UNV-EBT1 is 46" long and 8TSSF-254-UNV-EBT1 is 92" long.

C2tuck 30x30x14

30x30x14 Steel Pole Barn (12' Walls, 15'9" peak, 3/12 Pitch)

Original Request via PM from C2tuck:

I'm building a 30x30x12 3/12 pitch metal garage, 16x8 garage door, a 5x6 window centered on each side wall, and am thinking of putting 9 fluorescent lights in for the main lighting and maybe some bench lighting later on down the road.

I want to have plenty of light in there at night as I will be working on cars and other projects well into the wee hours of the morning.

I was thinking of going with a 4' T8 4 bulb fixture, but all of hem I have seen at homedepot and Lowes just look cheap to me.

I guess what I need to know is if this will be overkill and if so what you would recommend? Or if not what are the best options for me keeping in mind that I do t want to spend 2 grand on lights.

Thanks for all of your work Platonic. Which was your recommendation out of the four? And is that recommendation based on the work being in the typical car bays? I'm looking at putting a woodworking/metalworking shop together where the majority of work will be on the periphery and down the middle so it helps to know what type of work your suggestion was directed at.

Thanks again!

The top left layout in each collection is my recommendation. Though it was planned around automotive work, it is a very good layout for any application.

What software are you guys using?
There's only 1 guy doing this: I'm using Dialux for Isoplots, AutoCAD to simplify 3D layout generation and create final dimensioned layout drawings. Everything edited in Photoshop for forum posts.
