Hi everyone, new member here. šŸ‘‹

I go by NurnbergIronGirl.

I’m German & American, and I’ve always had a deep respect for quality tools, old iron, and doing things the right way.

I’m still learning, so I’ll ask beginner questions, but I’m serious about improving, and I listen.

I’m here for craftsmanship, standards, and real knowledge… not shortcuts.

And Yes I’m a girl, but that doesn’t mean I’m clueless. I’m here to learn it properly. If you see me doing something wrong, I’d rather be corrected than stay wrong.

Glad to be here and part of the community. 😊

Welcome.

I hopped on here looking for advice on buying sockets and screwdrivers.

I solved that then kept coming for everything from car repairs, jokes, pictures, guns, axes, and retirement planning (some medical stuff too).

I hope you find this place as educational and entertaining as I do.

Well you're certainly likely to learn the right way here! And the wrong way ... and everything in between haha. Seriously lots a good folks here with lots of knowledge and opinions they're willing to share freely, myself included. Key is to take it all in and use your head to figure out what makes sense and go from there. Welcome to the site and good luck with your journey!

Welcome Aboard, divergent opinions are the foundation of discussion.
Please don’t make the mistake of Political Comment, I have found that any comment interpreted as ā€œPoliticalā€ can get you suspended.
Fortunately my suspensions were brief.

Welcome to the forum.
Some advise;
Do a search before asking simple questions, the answer is likely to be here. Some subjects like best drill bits seem to come around monthly and have been beat to death.

Be careful of asking questions that just have opinion answers. Don't ask for the 'best' xxxx. Few here have enough experience with all the brands to answer that. Better to ask, What xxxx has served you well.

Your location is important. You list German and American. Where are you asking the question from changes answers as a lot of things differ in those two places. Even your location in America will call for different answers sometimes.

Welcome to GJ. I've learned a tremendous amount from this forum on dozens of topics. There are plenty of subject matter experts willing to share information and knowledge. This forum can also cost you a ton of money on tools you never knew you needed.

I assume you're from Nurnberg based on your username. I was just there last weekend and live not too far away. Welcome!

That’s awesome, thank you! I’ve already noticed how deep the knowledge runs around here… and yes, I’m trying very hard not to accidentally ā€œneedā€ ten new tools overnight. šŸ˜…

I was actually born in Nürnberg. I still have family there, though not as much as I used to. My Oma and Opa lived in a pretty famous old house right across from the Albrecht Dürer house, there’s a little knight figure up near the third floor corner. As a kid I thought that was the coolest thing in the world.

Small world. 😊

Welcome! cgrutt said it well above. You'll be able to learn a lot here, with appropriate winnowing of the knowledge.

If you truly appreciate quality and doing things the right way, the first thing you need here is a good BS filter. Be sure to use it, and read a lot of varying opinions before jumping on the mainstream advice.

There's some very knowledgeable craftsmen on here who have been there/done that and are still doing top quality work. But, there's also a great number of people who are here for amusement and internet interaction that simply post, without that background. Like any internet forum, the keyboard can certainly "enhance" the capabilities and qualifications of the person posting. And, the primary focus of a majority of the mechanics on here is home car maintenance. So, much of the posters experience is on the level of changing the brake pads on their Ford Focus.

There's another component that you have to recognize. Those are the true tool lovers, the collectors, the connoisseur's. They absolultely know their stuff, but their recommendations are always colored by their love of obsolete old iron.

Also, recognize that the average age of the frequent posters here is about 70. For many the knowledge is there, but the execution isn't. We quit actually doing the work 10 or 20 years ago, but still like to talk about it.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

I’ll use the search and try to ask smart, specific questions, but I’m here for the real-world experience and the back-and-forth with actual people too.

For context: I’m in Pennsylvania right now, but I’m in the process of moving to Texas, so I’ll mention location when it matters.

Glad to be here 😊

Welcome aboard! Do you have any current projects you’re working on?
Right now it’s an old Sears air compressor I rescued from the scrap yard. Plugged it in at first and it ran like a champ, so I was planning a full restore (and probably a little video series) once I get to Texas.

Then the other day I fired it up and the power cord literally caught fire. Turns out the cord isn’t original and the wiring was… let’s call it ā€œcreative.ā€ I think the pressure switch was sticking/gummed up, so I pulled it apart to clean it, and when I opened the switch box it turned into Mouse Trap + Operation at the same time. Springs, screws, little bits… everywhere. Took me about an hour just to find everything that launched, and another ~5 hours to surgically reassemble it.

I’m rewiring it now and crossing my fingers it comes back to life. If not, it’ll get benched until Texas.

Sounds like a worthy project. I would encourage you to buy/borrow an inspection camera to check out the inside of the tank. They will rust with age and become very hazardous under pressure. There are several videos showing the damage from ignoring this issue.

This is the best possible way to learn stuff. If nothing else, it'll instill enough self-confidence that you'll be able to move on to other projects.

That compressor is the "bomb" style. Horizontal tanks for some reason split and explode when they rust out, becoming a bomb. Vertical tanks typically get pinholes and leak safely instead. As another said, I'd inspect that carefully, and preferably hydro test it to verify it's integrity. You may not be able to home hydrotest it as well as a shop, but you can at least verify it's relative safety. do this google search for info: garagejournal.com hydro test tank
