My Children's say I'm Too Old To Purchase New Toys...

I have to say that, “NEVER,, Boys never grow up, their Toys simply get Bigger.” Just picked up last week a new to me Tennsmith 48” 16 Gage Box & Pan Brake and 52” Foot Shear... I was first introduced to Tennsmith equipment over sixty years ago. My Father-in-Law had purchased the same model brake. That I had access to until his passing. I didn't have the foresight to purchase it back then. Rather I relied on others to use their equipment. And always yearned to own the set. But always fell short of purchasing them. At my age I have to wonder does it make good sense? I've spent many years improvising by using power saws to cut the sheets. And clamping the sheet metal between an I-Beam and my big solid steel bench to form a bend. Or use my shaper's 16" vise. Tennsmith may not be the best equipment out their. But beats most imported Chinese equipment that's flooding the market today. Tennsmith continues to be manufactured in Tennessee for nearly 100 years...

I traded two machines that I had in storage for the two Tennsmith's and this near new Phase II Vertical / Horizontal 8" Rotary Table. I sold off my 12" Rotary Table last year as a package deal with a Bridgeport. Between my Rotary Head Mill and CNC I thought I didn't need it the 12". I still have a 20" Pratt Whitney... However this sweet little 8" table will come in handy..

My wife and kids bought me Legos for my birthday. I'd say the answer to your question is a firm "no". You're never to old to buy the things you enjoy.

On a side note... I could use a 6 or 8" rotary table myself.

Heck I am 76. This spring we had a tree fall and miss the house by 3ft. I decided to start dropping trees. New chain saw, 150ft of arborist 1/2" line, 100ft of 1/4" to throw into the tree to pull the 1/2" with, a slingshot w/ an 8ft pole to throw the weight further and much more accurately, electric power chain sharpener and last, but definitely not least, a used Kubota compact excavator to load 50" chunks of tree trunk into the trailer. Kids or anyone else are quite welcome to say I am too old but, when I get done and the wind starts blowing, I will just sit and smile.

I had a friend that was a Rolex Certified Master Watch maker.
He could do anything, big or small.
He lost the use of his left arm when he was 67, and started collecting small UK Moris cars from the 50s.
Made complete rebuilds, made them much better than new. Had about 15.
When he was 86 he got a second stroke, lost the use of both legs.
His grandchildren told him " Granpa, it is time to start selling of your shop, tools and all the Morris´ cars"

"NEVER, you will have to do that AFTER I am buried"

I’ll be 76 in a couple weeks. I am reluctant to buy new tools, UNLESS I NEED THEM. Then, well, you know!

Needs, Wants, Desire's. Depends one one's point of view. Need's are bare minimum to survive, While want's are simple the Desire for things that go past bare necessities. Actually most my family encouraged my obsessive needs. However they hesitated about my idea to build another 1500' shop. After all I already have over 8,000 square feet of heaven on earth.

Don't slow down, you will reget it. My wife had a Heart Attack 2 yrs ago and the last 2 yrs.
I have spent taking care of her and the house work, not much shop time, my body has slowed
down quite a bit. Like everyone say's "Use it or Lose it. I believe it now.

Two or three years ago I was preparing for retirement, and bought more tools, and a couple of project cars. I was talking to my adult son about it at the time and I said, " At least I'm not blowing your inheritance on hookers and blow". He replied, "Hey, it's your money, I wouldn't blame you if you did".

I’m about to turn 70. My wife and kids stated I was an idiot for buying 3 Ossa pioneers enduro motorcycles. I figured with 3 I have a good chance getting one running. They all think that I will crash at high speed in the woods. What they don’t understand is the hours in the shop puttering on them. Also when I ride now I find the fast action is in my past. I enjoy just putting down the road slowly. But I have all 3 of the bikes of my youth. 1972 husqvarna wr250, bultaco alpina 250, and the Ossa 250’s. I’m good for awhile.

They are just mad because you are spending their inheritance.
Dad told me he's gonna spend it all.
I told him that I'm the one that's going to pick out which old-folks home he lives in.

:)

I used to joke with my part that they were spending my inheritance. Then they started saying that is what they are doing. We tell them, it's their money and use it how they like. We don't need it and are fine without it.

A friend of mine is in his early 70s. He drove a school bus until about age 70 to fund his toy buying. I'm not certain he really needed the extra money as he sold a business for good money, and his wife is 15 years younger and still works.

As an avid "collector of things" over my 60+ years and having a serious health scare, I finally saw the light about 6 years ago. I purged a lot of stuff but still have a ways to go. Since then my rule is pretty basic. If it's a "toy" or tool that I WILL use or need, for enjoyment or necessity, I'll buy it. And by enjoyment, I don't mean just to look at something. Otherwise, it's a no-go.

Up date on my Tennsmith 48" Brake and 52" Shear...

The shear weighs in just under 1,400 pounds, while the brake weights 650 pounds. I don't have an open area needed to operate either one. Plus they're difficult to move. I decided to install four casters on each. So they can be stored off to the side and easily pulled out for use...

A piece of 3”x3”x1/4” angles was bolted to the bottom legs. And four 1 3/4” dia steel stock that can be cranked down for better stabilization when in use...

Same setup on the 16 gage 52” shear.

While white paint was out, I repainted the stomp pedal...
