This will be a bit of a slow burn, but that's the nature of home building. I'm currently in a 3 BR ranch with 3+ car attached garage, 4 post lift in one bay. I built it about 18 years ago. The garage is wider and deeper than standard and has plenty of room, but with 3 vehicles, mowers, motorcycle, ATV, and other stuff it's too often a giant game of tetris to use the lift or get the mower or something else out. None of that is enough real motivation to build or move. Current house is on 4 acres but I only owned 2 when I built. There's no great way to add a big detached shop that would be convenient to access due to some wetland areas that surround or slice through the property. It could be done, but it would be an awkward situation, and I'm just not interested in spending the time to maintain that much property anyhow. But that pondering is all water under the bridge.
I've decided to build on a single acre in a development and go all out with the attached garage(s). I started the design nearly 2 years ago, hired a builder last fall and broke ground a few months ago. I suspect it will be done early 2026. I think we've all seen houses built so I'll just start with some basic info and only get into detail once we get closer to moving in. There are two main level garages, one front facing, one side load. Each has two 10'W x 8'H doors. The front facing has a 20x20 bump out for a project area. Since it's a sloped lot and walk-out basement, that bumped out area is as much as 10 feet or so above grade. That either meant very expensive fill under it or a slightly more expensive basement level storage garage. The idea of getting all the lawn and garden gear out of the main garages made that an easy choice so I went with a suspended slab design over that area.
