the pictured fan says to use the pictured switch. we already have an older 3 speed switch wired in to operate another fan. the plan was to add this one to the same circuit. does the fan absolutely require that electronic speed switch?

Yes, It sends signals to the fan for speed and direction.

its not a good reliable old fashioned AC speed controller that will last for decades.

The wiring diagram shows a separate neutral path from the control to the fan, and the instructions call that out.

You need the switch if you want to change speeds, but you can't run two ceiling fans off a single regular switch. There are $pecial "multi-fan" switches if you want to run multiple fans from one switch.

Regular switches running multiple fans will cause them to horribly "hum."

I can't vouch for the accuracy of this AI info, but it mentions some ways to validate the info on the manufacturers website
I would not be surprised if there are errors. The AC ands DC references seem inaccurate.

No, the Canarm CP56D11N fan will not work with a traditional 3-position wall switch. It requires its own proprietary DC wall controller to operate correctly. [1, 2, 3]
The CP56D11N is an industrial fan powered by an advanced DC motor. Traditional wall-mounted 3-speed switches use mechanical resistance to lower the voltage sent to standard AC fans, which will damage a DC motor or cause it to malfunction. [1, 2, 4]
To control the CP56D11N, you must install the specific Canarm RREM-DCQ014-W Wall Control (sold separately). This dedicated control communicates digitally with the fan's internal DC receiver, allowing for 5 speed adjustments, forward/reverse operation, and proper on/off

Ffs... I highlighted the mechanical resistance garbage but that whole thing is really word salad. How about we not quote AI garbage that we can't validate? And if we can validate it, then it's not garbage. But if we can validate it, we should be able to link to actual sources with legit info.

Hence my comment to validate the info using the included links (in red).
YMMV.
