Hey all!

For those of you that have used the POR15 rust preventative and then did the 320 grit sand paper in preparation for the POR15 Top Coat, did you find the Top Coat to lay/flow out differently than the rust preventative did?

I want the Gloss Black Top Coat from POR15 to look smooth when I brush it on (using good brushes). The reason I ask is that the guys at POR15 customer service told me that the Top Coat and Engine Enamel don't lay as well as the rust preventative which surprises me.

Thanks for any advice!

Sorry @StangStang, I can't remember having any concerns on the outcome of my last POR15 project, that included a top coat but it was quite a few years ago.

Thanks for the response. I picked up some self etch primer and some solvent. I'll have to test on some pieces before bushing it on the actual parts.

I had good luck with both. The topcoat lays a little differently, but I didn't have any issues and it covers nicely.

Well I tried it. Did a 15% solvent and it laid down terribly. I called POR and they told me to do 10-20% solvent. I used bristle brushes. Maybe I should try foam?

A number of years ago the accepted method for top coating
POR-15 was to let the POR-15 almost dry but still have some drag when you pulled your finger across it. At this point in the drying process you could top coat (spray) it. Methods could have changed but worked for me.
Good Luck!

Just used a little of each again this week. I was surprised how much thinner POR15 is compared to the TopCoat. I didn't remember it being like that. Brushing required a heavier layer of TC than the base. It should have leveled out a little more overnight.
