Going down the planer rabbit hole, I have a dewalt DW735X which does a decent job but would like something a little bigger. Right now Grizzly is offering free shipping which is like 10% off so it sweetens the deal a little. Going from straight blades to a helical cutter head should be a big improvement in finish quality. Just curious if anyone has a planer they would recomend, I've been looking at used delta & powermatic but no great deals & I love old PM stuff. It seems like alot of guys are selling rough sawn so cheap it's worth milling your own finish lumber. I have also had good luck buying from Grizzly in the past, so getting a new machine with a warranty is kinda nice.

I have a old 1021 that I put a Byrd head into.

It's OK. There are some aspects of the 15" 4 post planers that I don't love, but they are better than a lunchbox.

@jar944 what is it that you don't like about those 4 post 15" models?

There is no pressure bar on any of the 15" planers, and there wasn't on the original 13" invictas they are all clones of. The 20" 4 post planers do have a pressure bar, which is odd as they are just wider versions of the 13/15". They do all at least have a chipbreaker unlike the lunchbox planers.

My other gripes more nitpick, and not fair for the price point of the machines.

The reviews i've read & watched seemed to all agree it's a good machine that leaves a great finish. I am still looking at some used planers, I a PM 100 but am concerned the 12" inch width may be limiting. !5" width seems like a sweet spot, though an 18 or 20 for the right price would be nice.

So now I'm looking at a few older powermatic 180s, a 5hp 1ph & 7 1/2 hp 3ph. The 3ph looks real nice, owned by an older guy & it's under 1000$. I already have a vfd set up & these old PMs are solid machines, both have knife cutter heads & pressure bars. Going to look at one tomorrow & bringing the trailer so hopefully it works out, plus it's wired & operational so I can get a good feel for it.

Under 1k for a pm180 isn't bad at all. I paid $800 for the one I had and it needed a motor starter and a good bit of clean-up.

So I bought the pm180, 1000$ and it has been upgraded to a helical head, bonus. The machine is ready to run but I want to clean it up, lube, adjust, make the tables shiny. Looks like mid 80s, have to check serial # , it's a heavy beast, now to fab a rolling base. I think this is an upgrade from the griz.

Save yourself the aggravation and just get a pallet jack instead of casters/rolling base.

The hermance head is worth the 1k alone.

With it being a later model with segmented chip breaker (if it has a segmented infeed even better) you came out well.

It's far and away better than the grizzly (or any 4 post planer)

Now to decide if I keep my dewalt 735 planer or sell it? It's actually a nice planer that I'm thinking with a helical head would be great for all the small stuff. I know this is GJ & should probably keep it & get a pm100 also for the medium stuff, lol.

If the pm wasn't helical AND the 735 was, I could see a reason for both.

Or if for some reason you needed a job site planer

A helical head is quite an expensive upgrade for a backup tool that would likely only be helpful if you need to bring a planer to a project.

I've been wanting a 735 for a while... Wish I was closer

So I'm trying to figure out the year, it looks like 01, I thought this was 80s vintage but the sn seems newer. The sn is 0101080007 of anyone can help date it, I'm just not finding a match.

I may have a 735 with a helical head, infeed and outfeed tables and a stand coming up for sale in a few weeks. I'll PM you if you like.
