Hello everyone! I love tools and repairing lawnmowers and stuff.
If you like repairing small engines (single cylinder, 4 stroke), I highly suggest you subscribe to James Condon's YouTube Channel. While he focuses on generators most all 4 stroke engines built in the past 25+? years are "Honda clones" so it does not matter what they are bolted to.

Stumbled across this thread again and it brought something up.

I have a retired single lady friend who has had her fair share of small engine "problems". Being on a "fixed income" means a $200+ repair bill is hard on the budget. I got her a good running used lawnmower last year and made sure her snow blower was working good this fall. I would gladly keep fixing any problems, but she lives about an hour away so its not like I can just run over there.

So the other day, while I was bragging how easy it is to fix most small engine problems (after you have been working on them for years), she said, "Will you teach me ?" I immediately agreed, but now I'm having second thoughts !

Why should she spend $50+ on tools (sockets, wrenches, carb clean kit and a maybe a bucket of Chem-Dip) when she likely won't use them for several years and then (like the rest of us old farts) forget what I taught her ?

I will show her how to drain the carb on her equipment and other preventive maintenance. (People still believe you need to change the spark plug every year. Shops charge $20 -$30 for that ! I have old rototiller that I have not changed the oil in about 5 years !)

Howdy WoodenDentures,

Welcome to the forum, I mowed lawns for the neighbourhood when I was a kid, and my grandfather taught me how to service the mower engine after he saw what the local shop tried to charge me for that privilege. While I haven't serviced a motor in a few years now, I enjoyed getting an old motor started again, and enjoyed it more when it became easier and more reliable to start.

I hope to see you around on the forum!
Harmo.
