Black Friday, Prime Day—Good God, the frenzy of consumerism is enough to drive a sane man mad. The whole charade is designed to lure you into buying junk you don’t need and will rarely use, all under the seductive guise of a bargain. I already hemorrhage enough cash and accumulate enough **** to last several lifetimes.

But last week, necessity reared its ugly head. I needed a few things and figured I’d gamble on Prime Day, hoping the capitalist gods would smile upon me. The prices didn’t plummet as dramatically as I’d hoped, but I did save a few bucks. Here’s the haul:

NOCO Boost X GBX45. The Rivian needed an emergency 12V source, and I’d never owned a jump box. General consensus is NOCO is the king, and this little GBX45 was 25% off.Nitecore NU45 Headlamp. These headlamps are...

Forgot to mention:

1. I am not sponsored by any of these folks and bought each with my own money.
2. Except the RUX… They sent me one for review. I didn’t pay for it, but I really, really like it…

The Olight Baton4 is on sale too. I keep thinking of snagging one.

I have the same problem as you with Prime days. I did pick up a few things that I need that I've been holding off on hoping they'd be on sale. Last year I went nuts and spent way too much. This year I used the savings to pick up a few Christmas presents for others.

Cute... $300 really cool Rubbermaid Tote. I actually like it. I need to look into other sizes of the thing to decide If I will purchase a "Smaller" one.

The RUX? It does so much. Look up reviews on YouTube. Only makes sense for the right guy, but holy hell is it amazing. Built with passion too…

I don’t think they make a smaller one yet.

The Noco GBX units have been problematic for me, especially the GBX55. With a sample size of about a dozen units I have three dead ones on the shelf. It has something to do with the charging current with the USB-C vs USB micro, if the units are neglected and discharge past a certain point they won’t accept a charge again. My personal GBX45 purchased in 2021 has been fine, but I recharge it every 6 months or so. My four GB40’s and the dozen or so GB40’s I have at work have been rock solid with some now being 5 years old. As appealing as the USB-C units are, going forward I’m sticking with the GB.

I was speaking to of the managers at work who had a 4500 LCF truck with a dead battery because someone left the lift gate circuit on over the weekend. He wasn’t convinced that the GB40 in the truck would do anything for him, but was amazed when the truck fired right up.

I have several LiOn jump starters, not this brand, and they're really handy. One is really small and fairly low power but enough to get a compact 4cyl car started when it hasn't been run in a while, while the other, a Gooloo, is much larger and more powerful and with its boost mode has never failed to get any car started. Every car should have one of these, along with standard jumper cables, basic tools, 1st aid kit, emergency supplies, etc.

This is the one a lot of YouTubers recommend:

But all of my trickle chargers are NOCO and they’ve been absolutely bulletproof… So, brand loyalty swayed me a bit.

I had another PM on the RUX 70L and thought I would answer publicly.

This thing makes zero sense for 90% of the people out there. It’s a $300 thing that can’t decide what it wants to be.

BUT, if you see it and you can envision a use case in your life, it’s probably the best built consumer product I’ve come across in the past year. I don’t know these people at all, but can you tell you someone put a **** TON of passion into the design and fabrication of this bin/bag/tote thing… It’s really pretty amazing.

Here’s a basic overview:

In my minds eye, I see it as super functional for “overland” type use cases… camp kitchen foundation, recovery gear, tool bag, camp bedding organization, etc…

I don’t overland. I use it as our beach bag basically... I load it with towels, snacks, and even our Cliq chairs… All we bring is the RUX and a small cooler and we are good to go. Works fantastic for that, but you gotta be a pretty dedicated beach goer for the price to make sense.… and that’s one thing i am…

That's the problem. How many of those YouTubers recommend that from actual experience using the unit or being sponsored by them?

There is no way I'm going to be charging a lithium battery made by GOOLOO.

I've had positive results with all Nocos and Weegos. I have now switched to using this one from Costco.

It's lithium iron phosphate which in theory should be safe for storage in a vehicle exposed in the Arizona sun. Hard to find jump starters using that battery technology from anyone else.

Probably has to do with whatever BMS system they're using. Micro USB tends to be somewhat low in maximum current it is rated for. Guessing some of these might be charging the battery too quickly.

Sounds similar to problems with M18 8ah & 12ah batteries (likely m12 3ah & 6ah too), that seem to go bad sooner than other batteries, but using the slower regular charger seems to mitigate this.

I used to have some Antigravity jump starters, they were some of the first little ones available and made in the US. Really nice. They lasted 5-6 years, I jump started Harley's approximately 9 billion times during the first two years, then mostly cars. I believe they are still made in the US. I only stopped buying them because I'm cheap and there are so many available for less. Which in my experience only last 2-3 years. So you get what you pay for. They also make motorcycle batteries, that's why I first started testing their products.

Haven't used my NOCO GB40 a ton of times, it's more of a "behind the seat / just in case" type tool for me. I pull it out and charge it every 6-8 months or whenever I remember it. It seems well built and has always done what I have asked of it.

As far as my Prime Day purchases, my daughter just recently bought her first home and I picked up the basic Ring door bell for half off @ $49 for her.

I had the 150. Worked fine aside from in the cold, so had to keep it inside.

I have a Noco GB40 and a GBX155 which I think is their smallest and largest one. I've also had a Jump N Carry 770 for about 6-7 years.

The GBX155 was a black friday deal 18 months ago. I thought it might replace my dependable but aging JNC 770. It doesn't. I've had so many problems with the GBX that I've threatened to give it away several times. When it works, it has a huge kick - turns over even large diesel engines - but only for a few seconds and only if several other criteria are met - you can't have a completely dead battery or no battery. But when it works it will get you going.

So on prime day this year, I bought another JumpNCarry 770. It's big, bulky but it works so well, I can't live without one. I also bought several of the noco small lithium batteries - I really like them - I might even try replacing the battery pack in my old JNC770 with a lithium Noco. .

I've also had the GB40 for several months now, I leave it in my SUV under the seat, plugged into the back seat cigarette lighter, so it is always charged. It seems to be much more reliable than the GBX155. I've used it dozens of times in that period around home, in fact, it's so convenient, that I almost always go for it over the GBX155 or the JNC770 if it can do the job.

Edit: After I wrote this I took my old JNC 770 apart. It was from 2016, so 8 years old now and the battery will no longer take a charge. I tried to install a NOCO lithium battery - it didn't fit and had different specs anyway, however I found there are replacement batteries available on Amazon. The Clore one is $115 - which with tax would be 80% of the cost of the full jump pack - that seems too high. There is a Mighty Max for $59.99 which I ordered.

So I have the new JNC770 which I will carry in my truck and the old one I'll leave in my shop. The NOCO GBX155 will also stay in my truck for now, but I don't know how long I'll keep it. I definitely like the form factor and weight of the NOCOs, but I do not care for the operation of the GBX155 - I would say I can count on it only about 50% of the time whereas the JNC770 works every time.

If I were to make a recommendation on small jump packs I would say go with the cheaper GB40.

I bought one of the NOCO jump boxes last year (saw it recommended here, I believe). And this year I got their trickle charger 25% off. I had been using the Harbor Freight version but it gets really warm and I dropped it, cracking the case.

From several weeks ago, but I just had to laugh. 'More Doctors Smoke Camels'.

I'm afraid that the youtube '10 Best Pliers', etc. ship has sailed. My working theory is that there's not much reason to look at youtube for product information at this point except for seeing what a thing looks like. Like most adult males, I already own most of what I need, but there's always a new The Precious to check out.

The internet is mostly there to get you to buy stuff. It does that by skewing search, making you mad, giving products to reviewers, spying on you 'the better to eat you with, my dear'.

I do miss Usenet and slow computers that were actually faster running useful applications. The future isn't all it was cracked up to be.

Hah!

Just wait until the retailers get this AI stuff figured out!

It will guess what you want, order at least two of them, charge your credit card (with an appropriate assistance fee, of course) and develop a cover story for your significant other of why the two of you can't live without it. 😈

It’s pretty easy to sniff out real reviews from sponsored content. You just gotta pay attention and take everything with a grain of salt.

I have people send me **** to review all the time… but I don’t particularly like writing negative reviews, so I rarely participate.
